This project was supposed to be an easy makeover — a simple custom repaint. But as anyone who refinishes furniture knows, some pieces have other plans.
The original scope was straightforward: tighten a loose top, remove a few decorative details for a cleaner aesthetic, repaint the existing black finish into a rich, true black, and update the piece with champagne bronze hardware. I started with basic repairs, removed the hardware, filled in some routed details, and began prepping for paint.
That’s when the chalk paint nightmare revealed itself.
As soon as I started sanding, the existing chalk paint began chipping and lifting unevenly across the surface. There was no way to paint over it without risking future failure, so what was meant to be a quick prep turned into hours of sanding and stripping just to get back to a stable foundation. It was a bit frustrating, very time-consuming, but completely unavoidable if I wanted a professional, long-lasting finish.
After what felt like forever, the piece was finally prepped properly and ready for the spray tent. I applied primer, followed by a deep, rich black paint and a protective topcoat. I truly thought I was finished — until disaster struck again.
When it came time to install the new hardware, I realized the holes I drilled didn’t match the spread of the new pulls. Ugh. That meant filling the holes again, sanding, and sending the piece back into the spray tent because the fresh finish had been compromised.
Once everything was corrected, I finally installed the champagne bronze hardware. The end result is a beautifully refinished piece with a smooth, durable black finish that looks exactly as it should — clean, classic, and elevated.
This makeover is a perfect reminder that furniture refinishing isn’t always quick or easy, even when it looks that way at the start. Sometimes doing it right means slowing down, fixing the problems you uncover, and trusting the process — even when it tests your patience.
If you’re curious what really goes on behind the scenes of a “simple” furniture makeover, this video shows it all from start to finish.
