Transforming raw wood into biophilic "Grainscapes", blending grain, color, and species to highlight the beauty and diversity of natural wood.

My work begins where nature leaves off. I create impressionistic landscapes contrasting the natural grain of multiple wood species as both canvas and collaborator. Each biophilic piece starts with a careful study of the wood’s surface — the movement, texture, and patterns already suggest horizon lines, flowing water, cloud forms, or distant hills. Using primarily dyes and stain, I build upon the o

rganic features of the wood’s grain to evoke atmosphere, light, and emotion. The result is a kind of quiet narrative — landscapes that feel discovered rather than invented. These “grainscapes” are meditative by nature, inviting the viewer to slow down and connect with something both familiar and timeless. Each piece is one of a kind, grounded in authenticity, and shaped by a dialogue between hand and material. I work primarily with locally felled trees and reclaimed lumber. When starting with whole logs, I mill them myself — a process that allows me to shape the material from its rawest form. That connection to place and process becomes part of the story within each finished piece. It keeps my process grounded in sustainability and connects each piece to the region where it’s from. Based in the Historic Kenwood neighborhood of St. Pete, I am an active member of their Artist Enclave and a retail gallery artist at Florida Craft Arts. My goal is to make biophilic art that brings the outside in, helping people see the extraordinary in the subtle grain of things. EVIDENCE OF CONTACT – NEW WORK BY SCOTT SOLARY

The works in Evidence of Contact span four interconnected series, each examining a different way that surfaces retain memory. Together they move between gesture and discovery, intention and accident, revealing that every mark, impression, stain, and grain pattern is evidence of an encounter. Whether formed by nature, by human hands, or simply through the passage of time, these works invite you to consider surfaces not as passive objects, but as witnesses to experience.

Unbound: a series of abstract pieces built through layers of pressure, movement, and intuitive mark-making, these works are less concerned with depicting a place than evoking a state of becoming.

Static: explores the fractured emotional and cultural landscape of contemporary America. The series reflects the shared psychological atmosphere of living within a culture saturated by constant (mis)information, division, and change.

Remnants: details excavated from one drop cloth exactly as they were discovered. Nothing has been added or removed. Years of spilled paint, dye, glue and accumulated wear become unintentional compositions. They capture not what was made, but what remained long enough to finally be seen.

Dialogues: brings together two distinct materials—painted canvas and reclaimed wood—allowing each to retain its own voice while creating something neither could achieve alone. Each work explores how contrasting materials can coexist without losing their individual identities, revealing meaning not through dominance, but through relationship.

Across Evidence of Contact, the work suggests that every surface carries a history. Some histories are deliberately made, others quietly accumulated, and still others revealed only through careful attention. Whether through abstraction, found material, or the meeting of wood and canvas, these works asks to look beyond appearanceand recognize the countless points of contact that shapeboth objects and ourselves.

Continuing my experiments with mixing live edge with canvas. This is "Anima". Another "off-cut" canvas from the drop cloth series with oak. This one pretty much made itself, almost without me, the media seemed to belong together somehow, despite my judgement. Love to hear your thoughts. Have I lost it? Or found it?

Very honored to have been included in this year's student exchange to Takamatsu, Japan. Each year the students take a gift to present to the Mayor of Takamatsu on behalf of the City of St. Petersburg. Gift culture in Japan is very important. It emphasizes the care and forethought you have for your guest or host, and in this case demonstrates the 65-year friendship between the two cities.

"Falling" was chosen as this year's gift to the mayor. Officially the farthest away from St. Pete my work will have traveled. Thank you for including me.

A series of canvases integrating wood into the composition: "Reach", "(Last) Obstructions", "Removed", and "Votive".

In these works, wood no longer functions solely as subject, support, or tool. It becomes an active extension of the canvas—physically crossing its boundaries and participating in the composition itself. The paintings and the wood are no longer separate disciplines sharing the same space; they have become one integrated language.
