Last year I participated in the "Love of Quilting" Postcard swap. The theme was travel and adventure. This is the postcard I submitted--THE ALAMO, of course.
Thousands of quilters created mailable, 4x6" postcards and sent them in by the end of January to Love of Quilting. After months of organizing and sorting, Love of Quilting mailed out one of these postcards to the quilters who participated.
Today a fellow quilter, who subscribed to the "Love of Quilting" magazine found that my Alamo postcard had been included in their postcard article. So out of all the postcard they received, they picked 8 to include in their article. My postcard was one of these 8!
Needless to say, I was blown away!

This week the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild held their biennial Quilt Show. The competition is divided into 21 quilt categories. I don't know how many quilts were entered in each category but there were 200 quilts in total.

Unfortunately for me, two of my quilts fell into the same category "Art Quilts from a Pattern". "Zinnia" took Second Place and "Starburst" took Third Place.

You might be wondering who took First Place--Clint Eastwood!

The third quilt I entered, "Indian Hatchets", was in the "Modern Abstract" category. It received Honorable Mention.

While all tasks in my quilts were judged as "well accomplished" or "outstanding", it's the judge's additional comments that are worth noting here:

ZINNIA: "Your zinnia is impressive indeed. Removal of the background around some of the leaves is an innovative design strength. Color graduations and thread work add to the beauty of the flower. Background quilting is well handled and the back is neatly finished."

STARBURST: Muted colors create a peaceful mood. There is amazingly sufficient value contrast in these quilt fabrics that the design still speaks. It speaks softly. Layering of the circular designs is well handled and visually pleasing. Repetition of colors at top and bottom give length and relate well to center."

INDIAN HATCHETS: "Repetition of squares on point is visually very effective. Asymmetric piecing in border contrasts stylistically with the symmetry of the center. Piping has consistent ruffled effect. Two-color binding is innovative."

All in all, I guess I faired pretty good, considering I've only been doing this for 7 or 8 years. Many of the winners have been making quilts for many, many years!

This year I participated in the "Love of Quilting" Postcard swap. Thousands of quilters create mailable, 4x6" postcards and sent them in by the end of January to Love of Quilting. After months of organizing and sorting, Love of Quilting will mailout one of these postcards to the quilters who submitted a postcard.
This year's team was travel and adventure. Living in San Antonio, it had to be the Alamo. This is the postcard I submitted.
Looking forward to March to see what I receive in the mail.

Just finished my zinnia quilt! An exercise in thread painting done on my Pfaff Creative Icon sewing machine.

This is a Melinda Bula pattern.

Such a fun project to do. I've included the back of the quilt, cause it so fun seeing all the different colors of thread.

The edge of the quilt is finished off with facing instead of traditional binding. Then I added additional stitching on the facing to continue the leaf stitching that would have been covered up with the facing.

All new techniques for me!

The Nancy Rybicki quilt marathon has finally come to an end. This is quilt #5 in a series of quilts made from her stash of 3" blocks--over 3000 of them! This quilt is made from the leftovers from those quilts, pieces that just didn't fit in the previous quilts. I took the leftover pieces, gave them importance by framing them, designing the quilt as I added pieces. Borders were also leftover fabric and pieces.
Nancy is Swedish and her daughter and I came up with "Pytti Panna" for the quilt name, which means left over meal. Nancy also loved cooking and collecting recipes.
The back of the quilt was also made from leftover fabric pieces, which also included a large pieced-block completed by Nancy.
The flower applique on the label was also made by Nancy.

Quilt #4 of the Nancy Rybicki quilts. This is how I created this quilt. I started with the diamond of bowtie blocks and began surrounding them with various blocks. Then I added columns of blocks above and below the diamond.
After putting it on a queen mattress for measurement, I followed with more blocks to the sides to increase the width to make a queen-sized quilt.
When the quilt top was finished, I quilted it on my long arm quilting machine and finally sewed the edge binding.
The label is hand sewn and it is finished.
This quilt used almost 900 3" blocks.
Again, the applique in the label was made by Nancy.

This is quilt #3 for a fellow quilter who loved making 3" blocks and had thousands when she passed. Her daughter told me she loved window pane designs so I created a quilt with collage of various blocks. We called it Window to my lake. All her homes were by a lake or river.
There are over 800 3"-blocks in this quilt. These blocks were made by Nancy Rybicki--I put them together. The applique in the label was also made by Nancy.

Took an embroidery class at Grome's on velvet thread technique and made this wine bottle tote. Decided to line it and changed the bottom to a round bottom rather than a box bottom to accommodate my name.

When a quilter leaves unfinished business, another quilter picks up where she left off. I am the lucky quilter with the opportunity to finish this scrappy quilt that Nancy started before she passed.
I used 49 of the 50 blocks she made. After sewing them together, this is her beautiful quilt; something I know her family will enjoy for years. What a treasure.

I made a couple of memory quilts made entirely from a man's shirts and jeans. Here is one of them.
