43 years ago today, around this time, tragedy struck in Leesburg, FL. Three families lost a father, son, brother, daughter, cousin. . . as 3 people lost their lives in a horrific plane crash. The music world lost a giant, and for many, it truly is the day the music died. A bright career extinguished. We lost someone who touched our souls with his playing and writing. The inherent gift musicians possess is to connect with listeners and impact them. But let's not forget about the other two families who mourned that day as they lost someone: Andrew Aycock and Rachel Youngblood. Let us not forget that it was more than three families that lost someone; the band and crew were a family too, as well as the former band members that felt the loss.
Over the last few months, in addition to providing live bootlegs of Randy's playing and discussing his brilliance, we have also explored who he was. Randy Rhoads was a man of honor, and integrity. You will never hear or read a negative story about him. Look at his final act with a fan, despite her telling Randy he was almost as good as Eddie van Halen, he smiled, introduced himself and asked her name. He got her and her friend backstage passes for the Nashville show, because that is the kind of man Randall Rhoads was. As great of a musician as Randy was, he was an even better person.
Randy Rhoads recorded two game changing albums with Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake, comprising only 19 songs. His true genius was demonstrated in a live setting, which many musicians cannot do. Some musicians use all of the tricks recording studios have to offer, to hide their deficiencies. You can hear the facility of the instrument, and how he could improvise within the songs night after night. The music Randy Rhoads and that band gave this world is timeless.
Randy Rhoads is renowned for playing in and helping to form two legendary bands; Quiet Riot and Blizzard of Ozz. Blizzard of Ozz is an absolute game changer, people forget that when the band did that first Blizzard album in 1980, any sort of hard rock/metal music/bands were considered old hat; punk, new age and disco were all in vogue, so it was an even bigger feat for them to come up with an album that was not only going to be accepted but that would sell and become a landmark in rock and metal history.
It is sad he never got to see old age or the millions of people he influenced. To this day, his music finds young people on YouTube that also hope to someday change music, as he did. No one will ever convince me that the version of the Blizzard of Ozz featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake, is not one of the greatest bands of all-time. Their magnum opus being Diary of a Madman. They brought out the best in each other. You cannot explain or manufacture chemistry, and that band had undeniable chemistry! Diary of a Madman is what happens when the stars align and great musicianship comes together. Let's not forget Blizzard of Ozz's eponymous debut, top selling metal debut of all-time.
