Honest review on a Ruggable rug!

Do you read reviews before you purchase something? Especially something expensive or that you’ll be using daily? 🙋🏼‍♀️ I do!

I read so many reviews before deciding to buy a Ruggable for under our dining table.

So, why did I decide on it?
✔️ It’s machine washable
✔️ I got a light color bc I could wash it
✔️ It’s thin and easy to pull chairs out
✔️ You can reuse the rug pad with a different rug at a later time if you want to change it
✔️ Perfect size I needed for my space

Well, 2 years later, here is my honest review and I can say, I wouldn’t buy another one again.

Why?
✔️ Machine washing it is a pain! Mine is a 6 x 9 and it’s the max size you could wash in a large capacity washer and dryer, anything larger you have to bring to a laundry mat.
✔️ After washing it, laying it straight back on the Velcro type pad is frustrating and time consuming.
✔️ The pad you are supposed to be able to keep on using is disintegrating. When you pull the rug up, it’s full of black pieces from the pad, which get everywhere. I think I vacuumed 3 rooms, 5 times to get it all up. Then after washing and drying the rug, those black pieces get all over your dryer and in your lint trap.
✔️ The edges curl up, becoming very annoying and causing a tripping hazard.
✔️It fades…A LOT. Mine is so discolored after 2 years.
✔️You have to be extra careful vacuuming it and even in doing so, the edges still get caught and get ruined
✔️Expensive for what you get and how long it lasts

If you are thinking about a Ruggable, keep these points in mind. If you want a smaller one, it would be much more manageable.

There are other companies that sell washable rugs now and other great, less expensive alternatives that you can still clean easily. If you need help finding a rug, I’m here to make the process easier!

Back to school, means back to work for me! I did a few projects over the summer, but mainly spent time with my family and my kids while they were home. I am eager to start working on some new projects though! I just updated my website with a project I did over the summer and I wanted to give a little preview here as well.
This is a sampling of what you can expect to receive. Mood boards, floor planning (if necessary), sources and pricing. I am only showing a few mood boards here, but you would receive several, along with up close product images as well. This specific client was moving across the country and wanted to have a plan for their new house when they arrived. It was so fun to work on and I am now getting to see updates as it's being put together! They are implementing the design on their own time and as budget allows, so when it's all finished, I will post the after photos!

Today I went to an all day training for Houzz Pro in Costa Mesa at The Slab Studio, to learn more about my design software and ask questions. We provided feedback as well to help implement new things and make changes to things that aren’t working like we’d like.

I was with fellow interior designers, networking and learning from them, had a delicious catered lunch and got to meet John McLain as our guest speaker. It was a long day, but I’m so glad I went and am excited to implement what I learned into my business.

I made some changes to my daughter’s room to create more space, a reading area and to allow more room around the play/craft table. I also finally refinished the nightstand after a year of having it! My neighbor had it on the curb when he moved out and funny story, I found a report card behind the drawer from the early 90’s!

She loves how it turned out and I do too! It’s more functional, feels bigger and I love seeing this gallery wall now as I come down the hallway.

Her room has to be one of my all time favorites. It’s a beautiful mix of old and new, with unique curated pieces. I’m also a sucker for floral and gingham! It’s young and girlie, but classic at the same time 🤍

Sometimes when you live in base housing, your hands are tied and there isn't a lot you can do to change things. But, sometimes you have to be your own advocate and keep asking until you can get things to change. While I know this won't always happen for everyone, it's worth trying if it will make you more comfortable and happier in your home and it's important to you. Below I have a lengthy explanation of our personal process with base housing to get things changed in our own kitchen.

When we moved in the cabinets were dated, stained, sticky and stain was wearing off and exposing raw wood, so we installed hardware and had them cleaned. I asked for them to be painted and offered to paint them myself, but I was denied multiple times, so I let it go (for about a year).

We had to have our oven replaced because it was ancient and didn't work when we moved in and our fridge replaced because it had mold in the water lines.

Our sink was white and had been painted. After about 6 months, the layers were peeling off in multiple places and it was so stained, the only way to clean it was with bleach, which is a health hazard and I didn't want to use, so we asked for a stainless steel sink be put in.

I installed a wood trim piece on the window to bring some warmth and also made a custom window treatment for the window since I don't care for vertical blinds. (It's not perfect, but I was able to find fabric and make it for less than $20, I don't like spending a lot on something so specific to one window that I can't use again in the future).

A few months ago, I noticed they were painting the cabinets of the vacant house next door. So, I called the district manager and told him about ours, how I had asked many times and was told no and asked if ours could be painted as well and this time it was approved! Best of all, their crew painted them and it was no expense to us.

Our counters were always an eye sore, they had yellow staining and gaps in the "tile", but when the entire front of the bar was cracked and fell off, we were also approved for new counters. We couldn't choose the counters, but the flat formica is much easier to clean than the tile and overall much better.

I considered painting, but in the end didn't feel it was worth it in the kitchen. I would also like to change the faucet (at our expense) but am waiting to see this summer how much longer we will be here.

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask more than once if you have to. Just because you live on base, doesn't mean you have to hate it. It's not anyone's dream kitchen, but ours feels brighter, more updated and cleaner overall and we are thankful for the changes!

I promised a boy’s room refresh! This is my son’s room and although it was functional before, it just felt off. I forgot to take before pictures (I’ve changed it around a couple times), but I originally had the bed the other way and I used to have a ladder bookcase and things weren’t quite as organized.
The last 2 pictures were the before with his old bed and dresser. We decided to go from a full bed to a queen bed to better accommodate guests and the dresser was mine from when I was 5, it was small, one drawer was messed up and it looked kind of girlie despite my refinishing it, it also took up more space that we needed when changing the bed.
I had been wanting to connect the gallery wall and love how it turned out! I built the nerf gun wall a couple months ago and reorganized toys and books to make it more functional and also moved his clothes and shoes lower and added a shelf in his closet so he can reach and now get dressed and hang up his clothes on his own!

Changing a bed and dresser are big changes, but a lot of the other changes were small, but made a big impact!

I was just in Homegoods and saw this fun kid’s decor and just had to pull a few things together, I could spend all day configuring all sorts of designs in here!

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make a huge difference.
I didn’t like this drapery hardware from the day I put it up, but we had it and to save money, I used it anyway. They are solid wood so the length was set, which made the drapes come over the window too much, and because of that, I had to use tie backs, which I didn’t like. The rods started to bow in the center and weren’t the right color, so I finally took them down and got what I wanted. I only wish I would have done it sooner!
Now the drapes hang straight, they are all the way off the window which makes the window seem bigger and let’s more light in. The rods are black and simple which give it a clean and more cohesive look and now I love it! The difference is huge and only cost $80.

You got to see the hand drawn wall finished, but now the whole room is finished! I fell in love with the floral art the very first moment I saw it and I love how the wall now compliments it.

The additional updates:
Chandelier installed
New drapery hardware
New head table chairs
Wallpaper striped down and art moved

Since my business focuses on military families and making homes no matter where you live, I don’t feel bad anymore about having a green chain link fence in the background or the fact that our ceilings are low, I love our home and I’m proud to be a military spouse, living on base!

The first picture is the actual wallpaper picture I used to draw the wall. All I had was that square, so I had to figure out the repeat and of course I didn’t draw every leaf, in each repeat, the exact same, but this pattern is forgiving and didn’t really matter too much. I also love the imperfect lines in the leaves, which was perfect for drawing on textured walls.

Wallpaper would have cost about $500 and I would have had to make a grid and tape to keep it up since it’s not peel and stick and I wouldn’t have been able to reuse it since it’s cut to this specific space.
Hand drawing it cost less than $20 for the paint pens 🙌
