What if blue isn’t just blue?

That question pulled me straight into the world of Japanese textiles, where color can reveal season, status, geography and craftsmanship. Think indigo-dyed sashiko and boro, resist-dyed shibori, Kurume kasuri, richly woven Nishijin silk, Ōshima tsumugi with its deep mud-dyed browns and blacks, and the brilliant reds, yellows and blues of Okinawan bingata. The dyes themselves are part of the story too: indigo, plant tannins, iron-rich mud, roots, bark, leaves and flowers.

The more I researched, the more I realized these textiles are not simply decorated with color—they communicate through it. My newest Substack, “When Color Speaks Japanese,” explores what kimono, indigo and centuries of textile tradition can teach us about seeing color differently. If you love rugs, textiles, design or simply a good color rabbit hole, come read along. —Salonistahttps://substack.com/profile/9070395-salonista/note/c-346697498

Before cleaning a Navajo blanket or rug, take a moment to listen to its colors. Natural brown, black, gray, and white may reflect the original shades of Navajo-Churro wool, while indigo blue and rich red can reveal stories of trade, scarcity, and remarkable creative skill. Color is not merely decoration in Diné weaving—it may carry connections to the landscape, sacred directions, cultural identity and the individual vision of the weaver.

For carpet and rug-cleaning professionals, understanding that story matters. Thoughtful color testing, gentle cleaning methods, and respect for natural and early dyes help protect more than wool—they preserve history. Read my latest Salonista Says article and subscribe for more stories from beneath our feet:

When Color Becomes a Compass: The Meaning of Color in Navajo Blankets In Diné weaving, color does more than please the eye. It carries the landscape, marks changes in history, and helps transform wool into cultural memory. I have spent much of my life studying rugs and textiles, and color is always...

Salonista Says: Fall Begins from the Floor Up
As summer slips into fall, our homes begin to feel different. The doors open to cooler evenings, friends gather around the table, and the living room once again becomes a place for conversation, comfort, and connection. Before the first cozy get-together arrives, take a fresh look at the surface beneath it all: your floors.
Flooring sets the mood long before the candles are lit or dinner is served. Warm wood tones can make a room feel inviting, a soft carpet adds comfort underfoot, and the right area rug can bring color, culture, and personality into a space. Yet choosing from a small sample is not always easy. A color that looks perfect in the showroom may appear entirely different beside your cabinets, furniture, or changing natural light.
That is where personal design guidance matters. In my work as a flooring advisor at Metro Flooring—and through years spent studying interiors, textiles, color, and handmade rugs. I help clients look beyond what is fashionable and find what truly belongs in their homes. The best floor must be beautiful, but it should also suit the way you live, entertain, and care for your space.
Today, a touch of AI can make that decision easier. A simple digital visualization can help you see a flooring option in your own room before making the investment. Technology may provide the preview, but understanding color, proportion, materials, and the people who will live with the choice still requires a human eye.
This fall, give your home a thoughtful look before welcoming guest. You may not need to change everything. Sometimes a new rug, a warmer floor, or a little expert guidance is enough to make you fall in love with your home all over again.

Masterwork in focus: Sheila Hicks' intimate miniature weaving demonstrates an extraordinary mastery of form, color, and textile innovation.

Created on a portable frame loom, this "minime" piece reflects Hicks' deep study of traditional Andean weaving and Bauhaus color theory under Josef Albers. Through dense, saturated blocks of color and rich textural variations, the Paris-based American master constructs a profound, self-contained visual narrative.
