I’m picking back up on a series of maps I started last spring that use land cover data as a way to color a map. They walk that fine line of realism that shows up in much of my work. Why not just use a satellite image? To me it’s control, I can maintain certain aesthetic qualities that are both nice to look at and also help the reader understand the landscape by limiting the amount of unnecessary visual noise present. I’m not trying to trick the reader into believing this is a real thing, it’s not, it’s a visualization based in data. But when certain elements contain that realism, there is a connection that takes place that I find important to understanding what’s going on.
