Back then, living off the land wasn't a lifestyle choice, it was survival. And in those simple, rugged days, we clearly saw how the Lord Himself established the work of our hands. His provision was woven into every harvest, every chore, every meal placed on the table.

Today, our work may look different. It comes in new forms, new schedules, and new tools. But the truth remains the same: God still establishes the work of our hands. He equips each of us uniquely, giving us gifts, talents, and opportunities to provide for our families and to bring glory to His name.

So however your work is "established" today, whether on the land, in an office, in your home, or anywhere in between, remember to pause and offer praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, the true source of every blessing.

A Rainbow and a Promise

I took this photo about 15 years ago, shortly after I moved to Tennessee, long before Brooks stepped into my life. I hadn’t yet started my photography business, but I spent a lot of time wandering these beautiful mountains and country roads. It was a form of therapy...healing time after one of the hardest seasons in my life.

I remember this rainbow vividly. It appeared just before a torrential storm near English Mountain Trout Farm. To me, it felt like a big hug from the Lord- a quiet promise that everything was going to be okay. That’s when He placed Jeremiah 29:11 on my heart:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.”
-Jeremiah 29:11

That verse became my anchor. A reminder that He truly does have the whole world in His hands. Life hasn’t always been easy. These last fifteen years have brought both unimaginable blessings and heartbreaking losses. There have been days I questioned God’s love and faithfulness, because I’m human. Maybe you’ve been there, too.

But I can say with honesty and gratitude: He has walked with me through every valley and storm. He still gives me glimpses of His love and goodness every single day. I know without a doubt, He still has good plans for me. And for you.

As you head into your week, hold onto that promise. Trust in the Lord. Lean into His love. He has good plans for your life - plans full of hope and a future.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. -Matthew 5:4

As we go into August, we always try to reflect on the previous month as July is not our favorite month of the year. So much grief occurred for us in that month. Some of that grief is old and some of it now is new with the passing of three people dear to me this July. I had the privilege to preach two of those funerals.

We say all the time that you never what someone is going through and it’s very true. Grief is a part of life unfortunately and it is okay to not be okay.

Take your time because there is no right or wrong way to grieve. It’s easy for that to take a toll on you mentally, emotionally and spiritually. That’s okay too! Reach out to others, dig into the Word, give yourself a break. So many of us try and deal with our mental health alone and you don’t have to. If you know the Lord, He is with you all the time. This photo is a beautiful illustration of what God can do with such an ugly mess. Rain and dreary days can make us lethargic and really drag you down. Then God shows up and floats that beautiful rainbow across the sky and reminds you that He is in control. He reminds you that beauty can be found even in the midst of dark and dreary days. I hope you hold your head high today. You are a child of the King. Weeping may last the night but joy is comin in the morning. We love you all. - Brooks and Christy

Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”

I will start out by saying that I try very hard to not be a pessimist. It’s in my nature to look at the glass as half full.

However when you go through so much, and this applies to all of us, it’s very easy to become cynical and to start questioning everything. It’s especially hard when you think it’s all going horribly wrong or so many talk negative about you or no one seemingly has anything nice to say about anything.

Romans 8:28 is a great verse and it’s almost become a life verse for me. It’s a reminder that even when someone does you wrong or mean things are said, God can still use that for His good.

He will also work it for your good too if you are walking in His will and you are fully surrendered to Him. In the end, don’t sweat the negatives because God is still bigger than your biggest problem and He can turn anything bad into something incredible.

We serve a mighty God! Amen!

What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. - Luke 15:3-7

The parable of the lost sheep is one I love as Jesus responds to the religious leaders of the day, who criticized him for welcoming and eating with sinners and tax collectors. They called him a hypocrite.

However, He teaches us some valuable lessons here. Every single person matters to God. Just as the shepherd went out of his way to find the one, God actively pursues and values every individual. The story ends with a message of overwhelming joy. Jesus explains that there is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over 99 righteous people who do not need to repent. The shepherd leaves the comfort of the flock to seek out the lost. It illustrates that God does not give up on those who have wandered away, made mistakes, or feel excluded.

You have to go into the world to find those who are lost but it doesn’t mean we have to be of the world. Jesus calls us to preach to all corners of the earth and so that is what we strive to do. I love this story because in the end, it’s never too late to find redemption until it’s too late. Today is your second chance and if you don’t know Him, we would like to rejoice over you if you come to seek His love. There is so much evil in the world but don’t give up on finding those that are lost because He sure hasn’t. ❤️

Look at this waterfall. You see beauty. You see something that is constantly changing. In going with the flow, all you see on the surface is beauty but underneath erosion is happening and time will change how this water flows, even how strong it is.

We should look at ourselves as beautiful. No I’m not saying that in a body positivity way. I definitely have days at my size that I think of myself as something other than beautiful. I know the looks that I get and the stares that I generate. Those are my own doing. I own that and I’m constantly working to get better.

In the last two weeks our family has been through multiple losses. We have been dealing with it and processing it. It’s what you do. You are there for each other. It’s how it works.

In the midst of it all, there is still background noise from those who don’t like you or simply don’t like the way you look. You will never please everyone all the time and the truth is you don’t have to. Those who truly know you love you for who you are and if you have a relationship with Christ, then you shouldn’t worry about it anyway. I’m talking to myself as much as anyone here.

Life is too short to worry about making everyone happy and the truth is that we are created in the image of God and you are beautiful. He doesn’t make mistakes. You will but He doesn’t. Everyone is dealing with something. Mine is visible for everyone to see and so it makes me an easy target. I get that. Don’t let anyone steal your joy and love others. We ain’t getting out of here alive, none of us.

Not saying that for any other reason than when we write these devotionals, we are just giving you our raw and real thoughts and what God lays on our hearts.

Time is stripping away at this waterfall and yet it is beautiful. It’s eroding underneath below the surface yet on the surface looks perfect. You don’t know what someone is going through and time is short. In closing it’s real simple. If you have the choice, choose love. Love somebody. One day you won’t be able to tell them you love them anymore.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ❤️

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." - John 13:34-35

These words are written in red in the Gospel of John and wow do they come in a very difficult time for Jesus in His life here on Earth. This commandment came in between the time he marked Judas as the one who would betray Him and that Peter would be the one to deny Him.

The difference between us and Jesus here is very simple. Jesus never exhibited hate or an unloving nature towards either of them. He simply continued to love them and command His disciples to do the same. That is a very hard task for any of us today. I speak for myself when I say I can’t do that. I’m no good at that and need to be better at it. There are those who make fun of me or have betrayed me using my good nature against me. Forgiveness is a hard thing. Loving someone who hates you? That’s even harder.

Often, our human love is conditional in that we love those who love us back or who meet our expectations. But the love Jesus commands is entirely different. It is patient, forgiving, and deliberately puts the needs of others first. When Jesus washed His disciples' feet, He showed us that this love requires humility and a servant's heart. Humility and the ability to deny yourself is one of the true characteristics of a Christian and I want to be better at that.

Because we have experienced Jesus and His forgiving and unfailing love, we are meant to be a conduit of that same love to the people in our daily lives including our families, our neighbors, and even those we find challenging to get along with. When we love sacrificially, we reflect the very heart of Jesus and point others toward Him. Boy that’s a hard thing.

In my humanity, I’m sure glad that Jesus shows me unconditional love and I’m grateful for His unconditional love. Loving one another is how we make this country and this world a better place. ❤️

But now, O LORD, You are our Father;
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all we are the work of Your hand.
- Isaiah 64:8

Happy Fathers Day to all the dads out there. As I sit and write this today, we are preparing for the family to come visit and have dinner with us this evening. A celebration of the men who have done their best to raise and support their children, still doing so as they are grown.

When I think of that, my heart is filled with gratitude for my own dad and even more so, my Heavenly Father. My thought is that as much as I want to celebrate Him today, I don’t need a day to celebrate the love, support, admiration, and discipline He gives. He is gracious and merciful, yet He is stern and unyielding. He is still molding me and shaping me even today.

My prayer is today is that you will celebrate the Father. If your earthly father has gone home, we grieve with you and remind you that you still have a Father who loves you very much and man if that isn’t reason to celebrate. God bless you all and God bless the men who raise their sons and daughters by relying on their Father. ❤️

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations.

On Wednesday, thousands of people watched John and his momma, Frances together making chicken salad. It was an ordinary FB Live for them. Both very happy to be sitting down with their people and making dinner while they talked to you through the camera.

This was not an ordinary livestream and for those of us who watched it, it would shake us all to our knees. Johnny said he didn’t feel good and then fell out of his chair. The agony of his dear momma ripped at us all and helplessness came over us.

Sadly, Johnny died during the livestream and a lot of us watched this unfold. Even more sad, a lot of people have reposted the video on YouTube to profit off of it and that has to be very traumatic for others and especially for his family.

Johnny was judged for his size and even in death, people ridiculed him. It was the worst of society. Me and so many of my friends who watched him have really had a hard time processing his death. After it happened, I sought comfort and talking to others about it did help. However, my greatest peace came from this Scripture.

His momma and family and all of those who admired him are the ones left to grieve and process it all. My comfort however has been in these verses. Johnny doesn’t have to deal with anything. I feel he passed before he even landed in the floor. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and Johnny knew his Lord. I can only imagine how he entered those gates with thanksgiving, praising his Savior.

It’s tough when you lose someone you feel like you know and it’s even tougher when the world around you can be so vile and cruel when one’s mortality is visited upon them. My peace in all of this and I hope yours will be too is that Johnny loved his Lord and he is rejoicing with him today! The Lord is good and His mercy is everlasting and He loves us in spite of ourselves. I’m so thankful for that and my peace is in Him. Johnny we will miss you but praise the Lord, you are in Heaven and we will see you again and when we do, we won’t be concerned about the ruthlessness and pain that this old world can bring.

In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, peace often seems elusive. We find ourselves caught in a whirlwind of responsibilities, challenges, and uncertainties that can leave us feeling anxious and overwhelmed. Yet, in the midst of this chaos, Jesus offers us a profound gift: His peace.

The peace that Jesus gives is not like the fleeting peace the world offers. Worldly peace is often dependent on circumstances—when things are going well, we feel at peace, but when challenges arise, that peace quickly dissipates. The peace of Jesus, however, is steadfast and unchanging. It is a deep, inner tranquility that persists regardless of our external circumstances.

This divine peace is rooted in the assurance of Jesus' presence and His promises. He assures us that we are never alone, and that He is always with us, guiding and sustaining us through every situation. His peace calms our troubled hearts and dispels our fears, reminding us that we are secure in His love and care.

In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul echoes this sentiment, urging us not to be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, to present our requests to God. He promises that the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

This peace is accessible to us through a relationship with Jesus. By spending time in His presence, reading His Word, and communicating with Him in prayer, we can experience His peace in our lives. When we lay our worries at His feet and trust in His goodness and sovereignty, His peace envelops us, providing comfort and strength.
