OPEN STUDIO
Friday, July 11th from 5–7 PM

There will be an opening reception for a small group show of Mill tenants in the lobby area of the Grinding Building (near Raven Books) on Friday evening. Many of the participants, including myself, will also have their studios open during the reception.

I’m treating this as an informal open studio—more of a chance to see how I typically work than a fully cleaned-up gallery space. I’ll be showing some new experimental pieces and curating a studio sale table of older work.

Hope to see you there!
49 Conway Street, Shelburne Falls, MA

The “lobby” can be accessed through Raven Books or the Bell Tower entrance (to the right of Raven Books). My studio is on the second floor (stairs only), just above the lobby area—next to Shelburne Falls Yoga.

It’s the last week to see The Electric Needle at . There are so many beautiful quilts in the show. The highlight for me was seeing Yoshiko Jinzenji’s Bamboo White in person. This quilt is one of my all-time favorites — it did not disappoint. (detail in the 4th slide)

I spent the majority of my visit admiring Margaret Solomon Gunn’s aspirational precision quilting. had several quilts in the show, no surprise that my favorite was the white wholecloth. (detail in the 5th slide)

My door will be open next weekend. If you’re in the Shelburne Falls area pop in and say hi 👋

It can be a little hard to find things in the Mill, especially with all the construction in Shelburne Falls. I’m located on the second floor of the grinding building next to the yoga studio. Use the entrance to the right of Raven Used Books (which you should also check out), head up one flight of stairs, take a right through a fire door, and you are there.

For my Western Mass area friends, Experimenting with Thread Colors is being offered at Paper City Fabrics on September 14th.

Ever feel paralyzed when selecting thread colors for quilting? Learn how to select thread colors that will compliment your quilt top. The “right” choice is not always the safe choice. In this class, students will learn about color theory and explore ways thread choice and stitch density change the appearance of fabric.

In September I teach with Malka Dubrawsky and Irene Roderick at Madeline Island School for the Arts. We'll be at their main campus on an island on Lake Superior in Wisconsin. It's an unusual 6-day workshop where you'll be working on one project guided by three instructors with different specialties. The first 2 days will be spent dying fabric, followed by 2 days of improv piecing, and the final 2 days are reserved for quilting your project. All three instructors will be there daily to guide and support you.

I used to think that my interest in natural, earthy materials and my obsession with all things shiny were contrasting aesthetics. I now understand that they come from the same place, or as Dorothy Liebes said, "Glitter is what the sun does to grass, what light does to nature."

This series of thread drawings is stitched on a metallic silver base fabric. It's subtle, but they shimmer as you move around them. They are currently available on the website.
