Caught this lovely little female House Finch in a moment of "natural pruning" on my weeping cherry this morning! 🌸

I used to wonder why they would meticulously snip the blossoms, "suck" on them, and then drop the whole thing on the ground. Turns out, she's "nectar robbing!" 🍓🍬

These finches are primarily seed-eaters, but they have a major sweet tooth. In early spring, they use those specialized beaks to crush or snip the very base of the flower to get at the tiny, sugar-rich o***y and nectar inside. Once they’ve got the juice, they just drop the rest—it's essentially a fast, high-energy sugar hit.

It’s a bit messy on the lawn, but the tree will be just fine. Just another reminder that there is so much complexity happening in our own backyards!

Meet my new 6:00 AM alarm clock. 🦅🥁

If you’ve heard a jackhammer hitting metal lately, it’s just this Northern Flicker using my chimney cap as his personal stadium. Apparently, my house has the best acoustics in the neighborhood!

Why the heavy metal concert? It turns out he’s not looking for bugs or trying to break in. He’s "drumming"—woodpeckers use resonant metal surfaces like a megaphone to announce their territory and find a mate. The louder the bang, the better the broadcast!

I guess I should be flattered he chose my roof for his world tour? 🤘🏠
