New to knitting?
1. Start simple! The project doesn't have to be large - a simple scarf, hat, or cowl are all great starts. Dishcloths are great too.
2. Knit on your project every day, even if it is only for a row or two. This accomplishes two things: daily practice of your new skill and your project grows.
3. Mistakes are just advanced techniques. Just about everything you accidentally do while learning - from making a hole (advanced knitters call that lace) to dropping a column of stitches (yep, there are patterns that do that on purpose, too). Obviously, the idea is to learn to do these things on purpose instead of by accident!
