So much to dive into with this project!
Backstory! So my clients had this fabulous bonus room the size of their garage. The conundrum… was the space was only accessible through the primary bedroom.
How do we turn this space into something functional? Clients had some needs such as an office space and a library but they needed help with ex*****on and cohesiveness from their bedroom. The vibe was something moody, dark but not overwhelming, warm and welcoming.
My first initial thoughts were- wow we have so much space, we can use 1/3 of this for two walk in closets for him and her. Originally to get into the space, there was a small door and you stepped down about 6”. To make the closets more cohesive to the bedroom my idea was to
A. Widen the door frame
B. Keep the closets the same level as the bedroom and THEN do the step down. So we had contractors create a platform and step about 8’ into the space.
C. Keep the already existing wood floors from the bedroom and carry them into the new space.
Now for cohesiveness. If you are bold, love explosion of color, color dredging is for you and this space made it SO easy with the low ceilings. The dredge of Van Deusen from Benjamin Moore gave this space the look we were going for.
For added character, we added picture frame molding and carried the same motif into the primary bedroom as well to add to the cohesiveness that this is one space now.
Because the ceilings in the bonus space angle down, I drew up measurements for custom bookshelves so that they also flowed with the shape of the room. Seeing them in person was an absolute dream.
My clients desire for vintage, warm, cozy, and moody (all of the adjectives) made it so fun for me to grow as a designer and have a new appreciation for color. This project was so much fun!
