Annie Morton Designs A small family farm and sewing studio located in beautiful Athens Tennessee.

With the wool and fibers from my sheep and goats, I create handspun, handwoven, and handmade textiles that I then make into gorgeous and esoteric functional textile art accessories. Here, via sustainable and ecologically responsible farming, we raise fresh fruit and vegetables, bees and honey, chickens, ducks, and eggs, and angora goats and shetland sheep. In my sewing studio I showcase and offer to my clients one of a kind, beautiful, handmade textile accessories.

For now, here it is! I went with a fringe in the slightly darker blue. It definitely sends an already epic shawl over the top, but I love it that way! Kermit and Jim would be proud. 🥰

Update- I haven’t made it back to the studio yet because there is a baby skunk in the chicken coop. I can’t decide if he thinks he is an opossum or if he thinks I’m a t-Rex. Either way, his MO is to freeze and play dead every time I go out there. We’ve been at this for over an hour now with very little progress getting him out of Fowlcatraz…

Fringe or no fringe??

It is Friday night, and I have to head into town and pickup grain for the animals and French Fry Friday for the kids. So y’all have a few hours to debate…

I’m leaning towards fringe but I also want to be done so I can spend tonight listening to my book and working on a spinning project that I found in a wip bag this morning. 😬🫣😂

Next up is Rainbow Connection! I’m hoping to get a whole season’s worth of scarves and shawls done this month. We’ll see...

Miracle of miracles, we didn’t lose power. Not sure how because that was a LOT of lightning, but I’m going to thank the storm gods because I finished the weaving part of my America 250 shawl.

We dropped off the ewe lambs with a Mennonite friend today. Circe, Sybil, and Birdie. When we embarked on this breeding adventure, I thought I’d give them the boys and keep the girls to refresh my stock. But this has been such a long year in a long apocalypse, I decided to let all the babies go and focus on holding steady as a farm.

I don’t like separating moms and daughters. Sheep and goats evolved in the wild and then domestically for the boys to f-off and the girls to stay in matrilineal family groups. Breaking them apart breaks their hearts, and mine tbh. Gracie and Tica and I are eating our feelings today.

I needed to make the best choice for my family and flerd. And until our world settles down, I have enough mouths to feed.

So the girls are gone. They’ll be the foundation ewes for a guy wanting to get started with Shetlands. He is not a fiber person, but I can’t control that. Maybe he’ll learn. Or maybe a spinner will get their daughters and granddaughters with ultra fine and beautiful fleeces for meat sheep prices. The world works like that sometimes. ❤️

In other news, it is finally raining here and my grass is green and all my animals are fat and happy. Chins up. Claws ready. One foot in front of the other.

Confession time. I have spent MOST of the last 6 weeks making batts. They feel so low pressure, I can't get enough of carding up new colors and blends. They're basically manifestations of fiber daydreaming with no commitment and lots of joy and happy surprises.

The good news is that I have enough of these buggars to have a new release a month for several months. The bad news is that I haven't done much else. ;)

Let's start August with one more set of rainbows (and then release the naturals and neutrals in September). This spring I was lucky enough to snag a bunch of baggies of add-ins from Neauveau Fiber Art Studio and I just kept adding more and more and MORE to my 60/40 mohair/shetland blends. Eucalyptus crimp is my new favorite kibble&bit! I'm calling these my VERY ARTY Art Batts.

Each colorway has 3 2oz batts ready to go. 6 oz total if you snag all 3. And they're all made on the same 60/40 base, so you can mix and match too. They're all on the studio site now, and I'll sync them to etsy tomorrow after y'all have had first dibs.

60% Mohair, 40% Shetland Wool with Angelina, Firestar, Cotton Noil, Eucalyptus Crimp, Wool Nepps, Bamboo, Recycled Thrums and Threads

And don't worry. I saved a full set for myself to make a Dark Side of the Moon shawl.
