Annie Morton Designs

Annie Morton Designs A small family farm and sewing studio located in beautiful Athens Tennessee.

With the wool and fibers from my sheep and goats, I create handspun, handwoven, and handmade textiles that I then make into gorgeous and esoteric functional textile art accessories. Here, via sustainable and ecologically responsible farming, we raise fresh fruit and vegetables, bees and honey, chickens, ducks, and eggs, and angora goats and shetland sheep. In my sewing studio I showcase and offer to my clients one of a kind, beautiful, handmade textile accessories.

While I’m not totally done with the honey harvest, it is time to start bottling.

First off- Names! I went ahead and drew new names for most of the hives. A lot of the 2024-25 tags were super faded, and there were so many good Queens of Music suggestions. The 2026 queen lineup is as follows!

1. Taylor (Swift)
2. Rose (Betts)
3. Neko (Case)
4. Carsie (Blanton
5. Gladys (Knight)
6. Etta (James)
7. Florence (Welch/and the Machine)
8. Tracy (Chapman)
9. Nora (Jones)
10. Tina (Turner)
11. Emmylou (Harris)
12. Senora (May)
13. Patsy (Cline)
14. Alanis (Morissette

If anyone is good at making shareable playlists for the streaming platforms, please go for it!

Bottling- Today and tomorrow I’ll bottle up jars of honey from the hives of Queens Alanis, Senora, Carsie, and Patsy plus a blend of all 4. It’s a couple hundred pounds, so it may take a bit. 😋

The apiary- it is a little wild this year. 14 full sized hives and 2 littles is a lot for me to manage on my own. We will do an on-farm sale, but won’t be doing apiary tours. We got overwhelmed and haven’t finished the apiary fence repairs. Where once there was a screened in viewing area, now there is a giant 8 foot gap in the fence. 😬

Y’all be good. Have beautiful days! Drink lots of water and hug your favorite mom-shaped human. Circle back for updates on the honey timeline. 🍯🐝

Well that half inch of rain was brought to you by the letters, f, and f, and s and yours truly trying to dye and scour fiber as quickly as possible…

Tbh- totally worth it! I can panda-spin all that fiber again tomorrow morning, and the rain is irreplaceable. ❤️🌧️🌈

My spinning group and I are enjoying a gorgeous (and a little toasty) day at Tsali Notch Vineyard’s community market. Lovely folks, amazing vistas, and a nice little breeze. 🥰

It is eleventybajillion degrees out today, so I’m taking a break from the scour and dye pots. The boys are at summer camp and the girlchild lurks in her lair making cool art.

I decided a cup of tea, an audiobook, and some spinning were in order.

Foster Leon and Dumbassian* had other plans…

Update! Thank you all so much for the suggestions. I have the most epic playlist now… AND since there were so many, I wrote them all down on tabs of paper. Tomorrow (or maybe tonight), we’ll do a drawing and pop new name tags on the hives that need them!

Whoopsie poopsie! While harvesting honey this morning, I realized that about 5 of my hives have unnamed queens! Mostly because the name tags from last year have faded and I can’t read them, but there are a few new leading ladies this year from spring splits.

So. All the other queens from the past few years are singer songwriter inspired. We have Bonnie, Senora, Pasty, Dolly, etc. I think we should keep on with singing queens.

I’m claiming naming rights for this hive. Queen Rose for Rose Betts, whose song Hot Girl Summer is the foundation for my own hobbit girl summer playlist.

That leaves us 4 other Queens to name! How about y’all drop suggestions? The singer songwriter and your favorite track/single. That way I get music suggestions AND name suggestions. 😉

*Image is Rose’s hive. She’s a short stack right now because I pulled two supers of really lovely light and twangy honey. I’m spinning that now and will give her and her girls back the empty comb first thing tomorrow so they can refill it for their own uses. ❤️
