These hand-carved Wood Spirit pencils are individually carved from regular #2 pencils, transforming an everyday writing tool into a unique miniature work of art. Each face is carefully shaped by hand, giving every carving its own personality and character.

The tradition of carving faces into wood traces back to Germany and the legends of the Black Forest. According to folklore, Wood Spirits possessed magical powers that protected the forest from fire and destruction. It was believed that keeping a Wood Spirit carving in the home would bring protection, along with happiness, good luck, and peace.

Another great project completed! Here’s a look at the finished carving created by one of my students from my most recent Beginning Carving Class. It’s always exciting to see how quickly new carvers develop their skills and bring their projects to life with their own personal touch.
