This fire extinguisher was certified by a local company just over one year ago, but, the operation label and other identifying information is clearly missing from the front. The face of the pressure gauge is also hard to read. Without any proof that the extinguisher was internally serviced, the contents cannot be verified, placing people and property at risk. Fusible links are a component of most automatic fire suppression systems. Once the temperature inside the area protected by the fire system exceeds the temperature rating of the fusible link, the fire system discharges automatically. The links are required to be changed every six months when the system is serviced. In this photo, a well known service provider has failed to perform this step, while at the same time certifying the system as compliant. Before verification of service collars were used, fire extinguisher techs were required to place these labels on pick up tubes before reinserting into the extinguisher. The only problem was no one besides fire extinguisher techs ever saw them, therefore defeating the purpose of service verification. They are rarely found, even in the older extinguishers (perhaps that is why the method of verification changed). How well do you know your fire extinguisher service provider’s work ethic?
