The Brion Tomb, designed by Carlo Scarpa between 1968 and 1979, stands in San Vito d’Altivole, Treviso, Italy, as a commemorative monument for the Brion family. This 2,200 m² masterpiece, commissioned by Onorina Brion, blends Venetian and Japanese influences. Key features include distinct entrances, a meditation pavilion, and a chapel nearly submerged in water. The twin sarcophagi of Giuseppe and Onorina Brion symbolize their enduring bond. Scarpa’s use of concrete, mosaic, and bronze showcases his architectural brilliance. The site, conserved in 2021, was donated to the Italian Environmental Fund in 2022.

Over 800 years old, the ancient reservoir known as Pimburattewa Tank in Sri Lanka was constructed during the 12th century by King Parakramabahu I.

As part of an extensive irrigation network, it exemplifies the advanced hydraulic engineering of ancient Sri Lankan civilization, designed to support agriculture and manage water resources efficiently.

1958…

When first displayed in a New York shop window in 1958, Verner Panton's futuristic Cone Chair caused such a stir that it led to traffic chaos. Drivers abruptly stopped to catch a glimpse of the chair, which was unlike anything seen before with its bold geometric design. The store had to move the chair away from the street to avoid further incidents. Panton’s design, a hallmark of Danish Modernism, was inspired by his fascination with simple geometric shapes and has since become a design icon.

Photo of Bauhaus masters in 1928: Marcel Breuer, Gunta Stölzl, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky, Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer

Gunta Stölzl (1897–1983) was a pioneering German textile artist and the only woman to hold a master position at the Bauhaus school. She transformed the weaving workshop, steering it from traditional, pictorial works toward modern industrial design and functional textiles. Stölzl joined the Bauhaus as a student in 1920, quickly rising through the ranks to become a junior master in 1927 and a full master the following year. Her innovative approach integrated fine art and industrial techniques, shaping modern textile design. Her leadership not only revolutionized the Bauhaus weaving workshop but also left a lasting impact on modern design.

Walter Gropius, a pioneering architect and founder of the Bauhaus School, believed that constraints can stimulate creativity. He argued that limitations challenge architects to innovate and find inventive solutions. This principle is evident in the Bauhaus movement, which integrated art, craft, and technology within strict functional and economic boundaries. Gropius’s designs, such as the Bauhaus Dessau building, showcase how creative thinking can flourish under constraints, leading to groundbreaking architectural and design advancements.

The photograph "Weavers on the Bauhaus Staircase, 1927" by T. Lux Feininger is a significant portrayal of leading women at the Bauhaus, a pivotal modernist institution. The image captures the weavers, key figures in the Bauhaus textile workshop, positioned dynamically on the iconic staircase. This scene not only highlights their individual roles within the school but also reflects the Bauhaus ethos of integrating art, craft, and design in education. The presence of these women emphasizes their contribution to the Bauhaus’s legacy in textile design, marked by innovation and interdisciplinarity.

Yep… this was us in College! We loved it though… this structured our mind to really understand how the built environment is , and gave us the foundation to formulate projects that seemslessly integrate Form+Function.
