Good projects depend on clear decisions.

A finish changes.
A dimension gets adjusted.
A fixture moves.
A new selection gets approved.
The change itself may be small—but if everyone isn’t working from the same information, it can become a much bigger problem on site.

That’s why we believe in confirming the details before the work begins.
Which drawing is current?
What finish was approved?
Are the dimensions confirmed?
Does everyone have the latest information?

A few minutes spent reviewing the details can save hours of corrections later.
And good coordination isn’t about adding more meetings.
It’s about making sure the designer, contractor, trades, and client are all moving in the same direction.
Confirm it. Then build it.

Have you ever stopped in a doorway and looked at the room from there?

We usually design a room while standing inside it.
But sometimes one of the most important views is the one you see before you even enter.

A doorway naturally frames whatever is beyond it—artwork, furniture, lighting, or an architectural feature.
When those sightlines are considered, separate rooms begin to feel more connected and intentional.

So when you're arranging a space, don't just look at it from the sofa.
Step into the hallway. Stand in the doorway. Look in from the next room.
What catches your eye?
Sometimes moving one piece of furniture or artwork can completely change that view.

Designer Pick: Frame the view.
Because good design shouldn't stop at the doorway.

Does this room need more?
Sometimes the answer is no.

A finished room doesn’t mean every wall needs artwork, every corner needs furniture, or every surface needs accessories.
Sometimes the best design decision is simply knowing when to stop.
I look for balance.

Does the furniture feel right for the space?
Does the lighting work?
Do the colors and textures connect?
Does the room feel comfortable and complete?
If it does, that open wall or empty corner may be exactly what the room needs.

Good design isn’t about filling the space. It’s about finishing it well.
Before adding one more thing, take another look.
You might realize the room is already telling you:
“I’m done.”

Think texture, not themes.

And just like that, we're saying goodbye to September.

The end of a month always feels like a good time to look around and ask:

What's next for your space?

Maybe there's a room you've been wanting to update.

A renovation you've been talking about but haven't started.

Furniture that never quite worked the way you hoped.

A kitchen or bathroom that could function better.

Or maybe you're simply ready for your home to feel a little different.

You don't always need to know exactly what the solution is.

Sometimes a project starts with one simple thought:

“This space could be better.”

From there, we can figure out what “better” actually means.

Better flow.

Better storage.

Better lighting.

A more comfortable layout.

Finishes that feel more like you.

Or simply a fresh perspective on a space you've looked at the same way for years.

As we close out September, I'm not thinking about completely reinventing everything for October.

I'm thinking about what's worth improving next.

Because a fresh start doesn't always require starting over.

Sometimes it just means seeing new possibilities in the space you already have.

So before we head into October, I have one question for you:

Here’s a design habit many of us do automatically:

Push every piece of furniture against a wall.

It seems logical. Move everything to the perimeter, and the room should feel bigger... right?

Not always.

Sometimes all that open space in the middle actually makes the furniture feel disconnected.

Look at this room.

The sofa floats away from the wall and helps define the seating area.

The console behind it gives the sofa a finished purpose from both directions.

The chairs are pulled into the conversation instead of sitting along the perimeter.

And there’s still plenty of room to move around everything comfortably.

That’s the difference.

When planning a room, I’m not automatically asking:

“Which wall should the sofa go against?”

I’m asking:

“Where should the seating area be?”

Once you start there, the layout can change completely.

Of course, not every room has enough space to float furniture. In a smaller space, placing a sofa against the wall may absolutely be the right solution.

The mistake is assuming the wall is always where the furniture belongs.

Instead, think about relationships.

Can people comfortably talk to one another?

Can you reach the coffee table?

Does the rug connect the furniture?

Are there clear pathways around the seating area?

Does the arrangement make the room feel inviting?

Sometimes moving a sofa just a few feet away from the wall can make a room feel more intentional—not smaller.

Create a room, not a perimeter.

Take a look at your living room: is your furniture arranged around how you use the space—or simply around the walls?

A product can be perfect for the design—and still be the wrong choice for the project.

Why?

Timing.

A beautiful fixture doesn't help if it arrives after the electrician needs it.

The perfect tile isn't perfect if there isn't enough available to complete the installation.

And cabinetry, furniture, lighting, plumbing, and specialty materials can all come with lead times that affect what happens next.

That's why availability is part of the selection process.

When we're evaluating a product, we're looking beyond color, finish, scale, and price.

We're also asking:

Is it available?
How long is the lead time?
When does the contractor need it?
Is enough quantity available?
What happens if something arrives damaged or backordered?

Those questions may not be the glamorous part of interior design—but they can make a significant difference in keeping a project moving.

Sometimes that means ordering a critical item earlier.

Sometimes it means identifying a backup before we need one.

And sometimes it means choosing an equally beautiful alternative that's actually available when the project needs it.

That's not compromising the design.

That's designing for the real project.

Because selections, purchasing, construction, delivery, and installation aren't separate steps.

They're connected.

And the earlier we coordinate them, the better prepared the entire team can be.

Great design doesn't only work in the room.
It has to work on the timeline, too.
