I’m finally working on the card back for The Quiet Wild — the one piece of the deck that has to tie the cards and the brand together.

This design needs to do a lot of heavy lifting:
• feel like a naturalist’s field guide or apothecary artifact
• be beautiful enough to keep on its own
• hint at the world and mood of the Quiet Wild
• unify every card in the collection

I’d love some fresh eyes on this latest version. Bearing in mind these cards will be 3x3 inches. So many tiny details may get lost.

What I’m looking for:
• Does it feel like it belongs to a larger world
• Does it read as handcrafted, aged, and atmospheric
• Any areas that feel too digital or too perfect
• Any details that pull your attention in a good or bad way

Honest impressions are welcome — this is the piece that sets the tone for the entire deck.

Some spirits don’t leave — they just change shape.

Years ago, I drew this little ferret in charcoal.
Back then, she was Pandora — bright, mischievous, impossible not to love. Some bonds stay with you in a way that’s both heart‑warming and heart‑breaking — a reminder of how deeply small spirits can touch us.
She’s been gone for a long time now, but this pose has stayed with me like a spark that never fully went out.

Today, I set the original charcoal beside the screen where I’m painting her again — this time in color, this time as a Quiet Wild card, this time as the spirit she grew into.

It’s strange how a creature can live twice.
Once in life.
Once in memory.
And sometimes, if you’re lucky, once more in art.

This is Pandora as I remember her, ready to take her immortal place in the Quiet Wild…
She carries the same quick curiosity, the same bright alertness, the same “small but mighty” energy that made her unforgettable.
She’s becoming the ferret of the Quiet Wild — the one who slips between shadows and laughter, who reminds us that joy can be fragile and fierce at the same time.

Seeing the old charcoal next to the new card feels like watching a story complete a circle.

I don’t have her full lore yet — but I know she has something to say.
Something about joy, or loss, or the way small spirits hold big truths.
Maybe even something you’ve needed to hear.

More soon, as we finds her voice.

White Gold Filigree of the Windborne
Some beings in the Quiet Wild carry a light that was never meant to be loud.
This mare is one of the Windborne — a rare lineage said to be shaped from high air and early dawn, where light and wind learned to braid themselves into living form. Her mane holds the pale shimmer of white gold filigree, each strand catching the world as though crafted by an unseen artisan.
Yet she does not flaunt her radiance.
Her mane falls in a soft veil across part of her face, not out of fear, but out of wisdom. Some spirits shine so brightly that they learn to soften their own glow, offering it only to those who approach with gentleness. She trusts her own stillness. She trusts the wind to reveal what she keeps hidden. And she trusts that she does not need to be fully seen to be fully known.
There is a quiet strength in that choice —
the strength of the shy, the sensitive, the ones who listen before they step forward.
Her alertness is not tension but awareness,
a tuning to distant currents only the Windborne can feel.
In her presence, the air seems to shift,
as though she carries a sliver of a higher sky with her.
And when she moves, the wind moves first,
curling around her like a familiar returning home.
In the Quiet Wild, she is remembered as White Gold Filigree of the Windborne —
a mare whose rare beauty protects itself,
whose light chooses when to shine,
and whose quiet spirit mirrors the part of us
that opens slowly, but truthfully, when the world feels safe.
Available for collectors — DM for details.

Today I watched an artist online say she can’t take her own wildlife reference photos because she ‘can’t go to Africa.’
Then she added that she does have a camera… she just apparently believes it only works on endangered species in remote locations.

Meanwhile my entire reference library started at county fairs and horse shows, which cost exactly zero dollars and featured animals who were more than happy to pose as long as you didn’t stand between them and the hay.

From there I graduated to zoos, botanical gardens, pet shows, livestock shows, and any place where a creature might hold still long enough for me to whisper ‘please, just one good angle.’

Fifteen years later I’ve got 5 terabytes of animals who have never been to Africa but have absolutely tried to eat my camera strap.

The idea that you need a passport to take your own reference photos is… wild.

Have you heard about the Quiet Wild Deck yet? The concept is simple enough, a core deck of 15 cards that are designed to spark a moment of self reflection. These are NOT meant as Oracle or Tarot cards. But based in applicable psychology. However, feedback has comeback that 15 cards are not enough-even though the concept is strong. 15 cards was only a drop in the bucket to be honest. Much like a Pokemon or Magic the Gathering deck; these cards are meant to be put together BY THE USER, so each person has a custom deck they can use for their own needs. You Start with a core deck of 15, then you can choose a 2nd prepackaged set of 15, a themed deck of 15 or pick and choose cards based on what calls to you. While this sounds easy on the end of the user it is super complicated on the end of the creator. I am currently in the dregs of Excel plotting key points for each piece of art and which have been turned into cards and which has yet to get lore or where I need to create both the art and the lore based on what I have currently. This is designed to be ever growing. To give you an idea of how BIG this project is; there is currently only the 15 cards. The additions look like this: Dog theme Add 190-360 cards, Cat theme: add 42-71 cards, Horse theme: Add almost 400 cards, That is not including seasonal themes which for my own sanity I think I am going to limit to 15 each but that would still be 60 additional cards. Each Card takes me roughly a week to knock out the logistics and whatever time it takes to do the artwork. The biggest challenge is not repeating myself with different artwork. The key advantage is to take the traits of the animals an apply them to the teaching in a way that users can relate. This is a HUGE undertaking and requires a lot of resources to collate the information in a way that make it easy to search. What this means is that as many of the older works that previously "looked' nice but had no backstory are coming back to life with teachings and lessons in both a short 3x3 version and a longer 5x7 version.

Now that The Quiet Wild has been introduced, I want to share something I’ve been building quietly alongside it — the lore cards.
The Quiet Wild Deck is a collection of reflective meditation cards inspired by animals and the quiet wisdom found in the natural world. Each card (3x3) presents a small story from the Quiet Wild and a prompt for reflection. The goal is not to predict the future, but to help people explore their own experiences with curiosity, compassion, and patience. Like the old animal fables, these cards use the natural world as a mirror for the human one. It’s a reflective meditation deck that uses animals and nature as prompts for self-awareness and emotional insight. This Edition is a Beta Version, which means it’s a trial run. We are always looking for feedback on this reflection deck to help it evolve seamlessly into it’s official 1st edition. Just like a living breathing entity this desk is meant to grow as your needs grow. Cards will be added in future editions as the collector base inspires them. Your insights are truly the heartbeat of this deck. It grows and evolves with every piece of feedback from our collector community, and it can only truly thrive because of that collaboration. If you have feedback, thoughts or requests please feel free to reach out.

I would just like to let everyone laugh at the person that came in my booth and was digging into my work thinking I was selling AI art! She pulled the Friesian piece asked the media when I said "digital" she heard AI ....I had to explain it and she looked disappointed when I dismantled each piece its source and the media... if this happens at all shows it'll get tiring but it was funny as hell when she stormed off barking about how I need to put up a sign that says its not created with AI

I’m giving my show booth the same treatment my studio gets: part art space, part story nook.

This year, The Quiet Wild is coming with me to Art in the Burg, and the whole booth is getting a glow-up—think old-world storytelling meets cozy, lived-in studio. A place where you can slow down, read, and let the pieces whisper their own little fables.

There will be:

Animal portraits paired with their stories
Little details and props that feel like they wandered out of a well-loved storybook
Space to linger, ask questions, and just breathe for a minute

If you’ve ever wished you could step inside my studio—where there are half-finished sketches, reference books, animal faces taped to the walls, and stories in progress—this is the closest you can get without tripping over my art supplies.

You’ll find this new Quiet Wild booth at Art in the Burg – Cedarburg High School, March 21.

If you stop by, I hope it feels like you’ve walked into a tiny story world instead of just another row of tables.
