A powder room is one of the best places in a home to take a design risk.

Because it’s a small, self-contained space, you can lean into color, pattern and atmosphere in a way that might feel overwhelming elsewhere. In this recently completed powder room, we embraced a moody, quiet and atmospheric feeling with a richly patterned botanical wallpaper, deep cabinetry and warm metallic details. The result feels intimate and a little unexpected.

These smaller rooms are an opportunity to have fun with design and create a true jewel-box moment. Go bolder with wallpaper. Choose the dramatic color. Mix in finishes that catch the light. A powder room doesn’t need to match every other space in your home. It just needs to feel intentional and memorable.

Sometimes the smallest room is the perfect place to show the most personality.

From underused basement to a warm, inviting family room.

This space had great bones, including the rich blue walls, exposed brick fireplace, and wood flooring, but the furniture layout and mix of pieces made the room feel crowded and disconnected.

The new concept creates a more cohesive and comfortable gathering space with a properly scaled sectional, a sculptural swivel chair, a larger patterned rug, wall-mounted TV, and layered artwork. The mix of olive green upholstery, soft neutrals, graphic patterns, and warm wood tones gives the room personality while still feeling relaxed and approachable.

I use AI during the early stages of concept development to help clients visualize ideas before we move into detailed design. It allows them to see how furniture will fit within the room, how patterns and colors will work together, and how changes in scale, placement, and proportion can completely transform a space.

It is not a replacement for the design process. It is a communication tool that helps clients understand the overall direction, respond to ideas more confidently, and feel excited about what their home can become.

This rendering gives us a strong visual starting point. From here, every piece, measurement, material, and detail will be carefully refined for the finished space.

This shelf isn't off the shelf.

A mix of solid walnut and walnut veneer, built to the exact width needed, and hung with a French cleat so there's not a single screw showing. It just floats there and holds up two rows of books plus a whole leaning gallery wall on top.

Custom millwork is one of those things clients don't ask for by name. They ask why the bookshelf they saw online doesn't fit their wall, or why it looks bulky next to everything else in the room. The answer is usually: it wasn't made for this room. This one was.

Worth it when the fit actually matters.

There's always that one element you fall for and suddenly it's just ... everywhere. A certain curve, a shade of green, a texture you can't stop reaching for. Not by accident but by instinct.
This is actually one of the most telling things about how we experience space. The things we repeat are the things that genuinely calm or delight us. Your home has always been speaking your design language, even before you knew you were fluent in it.
What's yours?

If you are ready to find your one element inquire at

Pattern isn't decoration. It's information — and your brain is wired to love it.

Humans are drawn to organic pattern, repetition with variation, and visual texture that rewards a second look. It's the same impulse that pulls us toward leaves, bark, and water. Wallpaper when chosen well taps directly into that response. It makes a room feel richer, more layered, more alive.

Every space in this carousel started with a client who wasn't sure. Every one of them now says it's their favorite thing in the house.

There's a moment in every project where the space stops looking like a room and starts looking like that client's room. This dining room is that moment.
The arched niche — clad in a hand-applied plaster finish and flanked by brass sconces — didn't come from a catalog. It was designed around the architecture, the family, and the way they actually live. The cabinetry wraps the entire wall, scaled precisely to the ceiling height. The glass fronts, the matte black hardware, the sculptural chandelier — every decision made in relationship to every other.
That's what customization does. It creates coherence. And coherence is what the brain reads as beauty.

Your home is doing something to you right now.

The question is — what?

Most of us were never taught to think about our spaces this way. We notice when a room feels "off," or when we walk into somewhere and instantly relax — but we rarely ask why.

That why is neuroaesthetics.

Neuroaesthetics is the science of how our built environment communicates directly with our nervous system — below the level of conscious thought. Before you've registered a single opinion about a room, your brain has already begun responding to it. The quality of the light. The softness or rigidity of the lines. Whether there are living, breathing things present. The ratio of open space to enclosed. The temperature of the colors on the walls.

Every one of these elements sends a signal. And over the course of a day — a week — a lifetime spent inside your home — those signals accumulate.

This is why neuroaesthetics isn't a design trend. It's one of the most important lenses through which we can approach a space.
When a home is designed with the nervous system in mind, everything shifts. Mornings feel less rushed. Evenings actually restore you. You stop carrying the low-grade tension that comes from living in a space that was never quite yours. Sleep improves. Focus deepens. The background hum of anxiety quiets.

Biophilic design — bringing in natural light, organic texture, living plants, and materials that echo the natural world — is one of the most powerful tools we have for achieving this. Research consistently shows that connection to nature, even in small doses within our interiors, lowers cortisol, reduces stress markers, and elevates mood.

This is the science. But here's what I know from over a decade of doing this work:
You already feel it. You feel it when you sit in a room that was designed to hold you. When the light is right and the air feels easy and everything is in its place — not perfectly styled, but intentionally considered. You feel calmer. Lighter. More like yourself.
That feeling is available to you. In your home. Not someday — by design.

The Design Principles at Work

This transformation is a study in commitment. A room like this only works if you trust the pattern fully — half measures would have made it feel busy rather than intentional. When the wallpaper is this bold, your job as a designer is to create a supporting cast that amplifies rather than argues.

It's also a study in biophilic layering. The wallpaper brings in form and color from nature. The living plant brings in actual life. The jute rug brings in texture and earthiness. The walnut wood brings in warmth. Together, these layers create the neurological calm and sensory richness that biophilic design promises — you feel it without necessarily knowing why.

And it's a study in the power of the entry. This is not a large room. But it now accomplishes something significant: it tells you, immediately and unmistakably, that the people who live here have a point of view.
