Today's job site: the Mary Ann Shadd Cary House - a National Historic Landmark and former home of this incredible woman who was an abolitionist, educator, lawyer, and suffragist.

We feel lucky every time our work brings us into homes with this kind of history. Grateful for clients - and spaces - that remind us why DC is so special.

Some of our favorite clients don't lift a single box - they just supervise. Meet Riley and Winnie, a sweet golden duo who kept us company during this morning’s organizing project. 🐾

FREE PARKING! 🚗🚗
We loved transforming this garage recently! We added new ELFA garage shelves and drawers from The Container Store to maximize this client's storage space, and installed Steadyrack 's awesome bike racks to get those bikes up off the ground and make room for two cars.
This family is ready for a busy fall, and they're thrilled to finally have the space to park both cars where they belong!

Round 2 of getting to know the Nik behind Neatnik!

🏡 Where did you grow up, where did you go to school, and what did you do before starting Neatnik?
Born and raised in Wisconsin, and stayed for college too (go Badgers!). Before Neatnik I worked in politics for 8 years: 4 at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and 4 at a Democratic media firm, which I loved but it was exhausting. Then 4 years at The Wilderness Society. In each job my work centered around research and communications.

🧰 What do you bring that a client can't do on their own?
Almost 20 years of experience working in people's homes and tackling just about every organizing project you can think of. A fresh set of eyes to help maximize storage and living space. And knowledge of which products actually have a track record, though I'm always finding new ones!

✨ What skills or traits help you most in this work?
I'm empathetic by nature. I don't judge, I just want people to feel comfortable and happy in their homes. I'm also impatient, so once I start a project I want to get it done right and fast. And I'm strangely good at spatial visualization, I can eyeball a space and guess the measurements pretty closely without needing the object in front of me.

📍 Favorite spot in DC?
Rock Creek Park in the fall!

It's back to school season and students are getting to know their teachers. For those of you who are new here, let's get to know the Nik behind Neatnik!

📅 How long has Neatnik been around, and what's changed? I started Neatnik in January 2007, almost 20 years ago! A lot has changed, but a lot is surprisingly the same. What's different: navigation apps make it way easier to find clients' houses, texting makes communication quicker, and I've got a bigger team now, which makes the work more efficient and more fun. What hasn't changed: clients are still dealing with the same struggles, not enough closet space, not enough time to stay organized. And I'm still shopping at The Container Store. A LOT.

🥪 Go-to Jetties order? The Sconset in spring and summer, The Nobadeer once it cools off.

☕ Coffee order? Trick question, it's a Diet Coke!!!

More Nik facts coming soon, including where I grew up and what I did before this 👀

Before & After: Closet Series, Part 3 of 3 - A Teenage Girl’s Closet

This closet was designed for one very lucky teenage girl using materials from The Container Store It had all the essentials - space for long hanging and short hanging, as well as abundant shelves and drawers.

We helped her unpack and organize it so she had a place for everything and could easily put everything back in its place.

That's a wrap on our 3-part closet series - thanks for following along! More spaces, more transformations, coming soon! 💫

Before & After: Closet Series, Part 2 of 3 - A Man's Closet.

For this client, one shelf backing to a slanted ceiling and one rod meant everything just ended up in messy piles : sweaters, hats, folded shirts, all fighting for the same few inches of surface.

So Neatnik added multiple tiers of ELFA shelving from The Container Store to create additional surfaces for storage - one level for less frequently used shoes, one for folded knits, one for jeans and casual layers with the hanging rod doing the rest.

Every category finally has its own spot instead of competing for space on one shelf, creating clear zones and way more capacity.

Follow along for one more closet transformation, this time for a teenage girl! 🌸

Before & After: three closets → two. Closet Series, Part 1 of 3.

A "standard" closet - one shelf, one rod - is almost never adequate for a person’s needs. Real organization comes down to surfaces and places to put things - with room to fold & stack so you can actually see what you have.

For this project, Neatnik designed a closet using ELFA from The Container Store to condense three closets into two - all while improving function.

Maximizing storage isn't about cramming more in. It's about building real capacity.

Follow along for two more amazing closet transformations! 👀

One of the best parts of my job is meeting with clients in so many of DC's beautiful neighborhoods!

This morning I was on Capitol Hill for a consult, then a quick stop in Tuckernuck's GORGEOUS new store in Georgetown (not for work!), and I'll be in Somerset this afternoon.

Earlier in the week we had the pleasure of working with clients in the amazing new Aerie building in Woodley Park (!!!!) as well as the iconic 2101 Connecticut Avenue in Kalorama.

Washington DC is a lovely city to live and work. Lucky!!
