Dallas, you were a good one.

A little competition, great conversations, new connections, and the chance to spend time with people who share the same passion for design.

Coming away with 3rd place in the Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge was certainly a highlight. But what made the experience even better was seeing how different designers approach a project, exchanging ideas, and getting to be part of a community that takes this work seriously.

Experiences like this are a good reminder that there's always something new to learn, even after 20 years in the industry.

Huge thanks to Reid Schindler, Mike Farley, and the entire team behind the challenge. Also, a big thank you to Fire By Design, Ledge Lounger, and the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo for supporting the event.

And of course, to my family for always having my back, and Lindsay for making the trip even more special.

A few inches off in your measurements can turn into thousands in unexpected construction costs.

On a challenging property, getting the elevations right before design begins is non-negotiable.

With roughly 4.5 to 5 feet of elevation change from the back door to grade, and another 12 feet to work with toward the rear of the property, there's a lot to account for.

For this project, we’re putting AI to the test. We’re feeding it actual site measurements, elevation data, aerial views, and inspiration to see what it comes up with.

Then we’re comparing its ideas with a design developed by an experienced professional.

The interesting part isn't whether AI can generate an impressive concept. It's what happens when you start looking at the details, the site conditions, the practical constraints, and the decisions that make a design work in real life.

That paver you love in the showroom might look completely different across your entire patio.
