Last night I was sitting on the couch with my family, working through new client paperwork and business cards.
I showed the business card to my family, proud of how they turned out. My sister looked at it, and said: “So what’s ‘M-kid’ mean anyway?” 😅
Mind you… this name has been floating around my house for months! That single question immediately spiraled into a full family debate on the couch, with everyone trying to convince me I needed to hyphenate the name or adjust the logo to make it clearer.
My answer? I love my clean, classic logo far too much to change it, so instead, I’m turning this into a learning lesson!
It’s not "M-kid"… it’s M-K-I-D (Studio on the end, because the alternative wasn’t available), spelled out letter by letter for Mikayla Klaas Interior Design!
At the end of the day, I don’t truly mind whether you say "M-kid" or spell it out, the goal remains the same: creating warm, classic spaces made for family, hospitality, and homes you never want to leave.

If you asked me where I find inspiration for my designs, I’d probably give you the expected answer: the world around me, nature, the changing seasons, textures, light… all of which are true.

But if you asked me on a deeper level, I’d tell you that my greatest source of inspiration is travel.

Some people come home with souvenirs. I come home with thousands of photos.

In a camera roll of more than 10,000 images, you’ll notice a pattern. Not just the selfies or landmarks; it’s the architecture, interiors, storefronts, boutique hotels, historic buildings, hidden alleyways, cafés, materials, details, and spaces that made me stop and look twice.

Every destination has its own design language…The way light enters a room. The scale of a doorway. The texture of old stone. The warmth of natural wood. The unexpected color palette of a local café. Even the smallest details have a story to tell.

The best design isn’t created in isolation. It’s collected through experiences, observations, and curiosity.

Every place I visit becomes part of the way I see the spaces I design.

I find that the beauty of travel is that it changes how you create.

This project has been a blast! This marks the second Lewis and Clark Tech School home I’ve had a hand in bringing to life.

This is a truly unique new construction project where local students gain invaluable, hands-on experience building a home from the ground up and it will be for sale in the coming days! Seeing the dedication these students and teachers put into every square foot is incredible. From the architectural details to the hard finishes, every selection was chosen to give this new build a classic, timeless foundation that a family will love coming home to.
A huge congratulations to the students and everyone involved in making this build a reality.
