If the first thing you're shopping for is furniture, you're starting too late. Before I choose furnishings, I look at what the house is already telling me—the architecture, natural light, views, fixed materials and how people move through the space. When those decisions are right, the furniture supports the design instead of having to create it. The house should do the heavy lifting. What would you design around in your home?

START WITH THE HOUSE. NOT THE FURNITURE.
When I begin designing a home, I don't start by asking which sofa belongs in the room. I start with the house. I look at the architecture, the natural light, the view, the materials that are already there and the way people move through the space. Those decisions tell me what the room needs. When the foundation is right, the furniture doesn't have to create the entire design—it supports it. The house should do the heavy lifting. Start with the house. Then design everything else around it. QUESTION: What is one architectural feature or view in your lake house you would never want to compete with?

09/11/2026

A lake house shouldn’t only look beautiful when it’s quiet. It should work beautifully when everyone shows up.

Kids. Friends. Wet towels. Lunch for ten. Someone making margaritas. And somehow everyone ends up in the same room.

That’s why I design for the fullest day—not the quietest one.

Because the way a lake house actually lives should influence everything from the floor plan and kitchen to seating, storage and circulation.

What does your lake house have to handle when everyone shows up?

09/04/2026

Your lake house should be beautiful — but more importantly, it should work for the way you actually live there.

That means thinking beyond finishes and furniture.

It’s about how people gather.
Where wet towels land.
How many people are trying to get ready at once.
What happens when every bedroom is full.
And whether the house still feels effortless when family and friends arrive.

That’s exactly why I created The Lake House Reset — a design approach built around making the right design decisions in the right order, so your lake house feels beautiful, intentional, and genuinely livable.

If you’re renovating, furnishing, or rethinking a lake home, my complimentary Lake House Reset guide is the perfect place to start.

Most lake houses aren’t designed. They’re accumulated.

And I don’t mean that as criticism. It’s actually how most lake houses evolve.

A sofa comes from the old house. A dining table gets purchased because more people are coming for the weekend. Someone finds a great chair. A bedroom gets updated. The kitchen gets renovated a few years later.

Piece by piece. Room by room. Sometimes over decades.

Eventually, you can have a house filled with perfectly nice things—and still walk through it thinking: Why doesn’t this feel finished?

Usually, the problem isn’t that you need more furniture or more décor. It’s that no one ever stepped back and created a plan for the whole house.

When I design a lake house, I think about the architecture first. The views. How many people are there when the house is full. How everyone moves from the water to the house. Where people gather. The materials. The color story. And how one room relates to the next.

Only then do we start filling in the pieces.

That’s really the idea behind The Lake House Reset: Make the right design decisions in the right order.

If your lake house has been collected one decision at a time and you’re ready for it to finally feel intentional, I created a complimentary guide to help you figure out where to begin.

Something new is coming to Di Leo Designs.

The lake has always been part of my story.

And after years of designing homes in the Tampa market—and spending so much of my own life at the lake—I’ve realized something:

Lake houses are different.

They’re lived in differently.
They’re filled differently.
They need to work for quiet mornings with two people…and weekends when suddenly every bedroom, sofa and seat at the table is taken.

And too often, they aren’t really designed.

They’re accumulated.

A piece added here. Something brought from home there. Furniture chosen because it was available. A renovation tackled one room at a time.

Until eventually, the house works—but it doesn’t quite feel intentional.

For quite a while, I’ve been working behind the scenes on something that brings together my experience as an interior designer, my years of lake life, and everything I believe about creating a home that is beautiful and designed around the way people actually live.

It’s a very personal project for me.

And I’m finally almost ready to share it.

Something new is coming to Di Leo Designs.

And if you have a lake house—or dream about having one someday—I think you’re going to want to see this.

Most homes don’t need more—they need better decisions.

The difference between a space that feels finished and one that feels effortless comes down to layout, scale, and how everything relates to each other.

I just shared a new post on designing high-end homes in Tampa and what actually makes a space feel elevated (without overdoing it).

If you’ve ever felt like something is “off” in your home but can’t quite pinpoint it—this will make sense.

This is what a $2M home in South Tampa should feel like.

Not just beautiful — but grounded, layered, and intentional.

The richness isn’t coming from “more”…
it’s coming from contrast, materiality, and restraint.

Deep tones. Architectural millwork. Balanced symmetry.

This is the difference between decorating… and designing.

The difference between a nice room… and a finished room?

The details most people overlook.

Texture. Scale. Negative space.

It’s never about adding more — it’s about knowing what to add, and what to leave out.
