From rainbow to cloudy. A tale of 2 blends and 1 dresser 🌈☁️
Back in 2020 I began a journey of taking my furniture painting from simple techniques to more challenging ones. I started on this particular dresser and painted 13 different color blends. It took forever, but I did it, and I learned so much. Was it perfect? No. But it opened me up to a new level of creativity that would shape my business.Furniture painting didn’t have to be boring. It didn’t have to be all white or single-color pieces. It didn’t even have to be confined to paint alone. Soon I was experimenting with transfers, decoupage papers, stencils, texture, different paint types, and new techniques.
Fast forward to 2023, I began experimenting with a different type of blend, what I call my moody or cloudy blend. Instead of linear blends, this style became more freeing. Instead of perfectly clean blend lines, it focused on movement. It’s beginner friendly, yet even experienced painters can learn something new every time. It’s become my favorite way to blend. I love the softness it brings, the mood it creates, and the fact that no two pieces ever turn out exactly alike.
Present day, this dresser was given a new life for a special little girl. We let her choose her colors from my inventory. She’s a purple princess, so we landed on Scuba Girl by Daydream Apothecary. She also wanted blue and pink, so we added Saltwater by Daydream & Pale Pink by Dixie Belle. For the top, I painted Pale Pink as the base & faux wood grained it with Scuba Girl. I sealed everything with Behr’s water-based poly, then decided at the last minute it needed just a little extra sparkle. I mixed glitter additive into the final topcoat. It’s subtle, but when the light hits it, it sparkles beautifully. I also refreshed the hardware with silver gilding wax. I love both versions of this dresser. Both are special. Both bring joy. Both showcase how much my blending techniques have grown. And best of all, both found homes with little girls who love color and happiness.
