And here’s the rest of the story for the live edge coffee table. It is finally done and ready to be given as a wedding present -with the hopes that it’ll be cherished by future generations.

I was extremely careful with the resin pours. Because of the brand of resin I used, I had to wait 48 hours between each pour. And every time I poured more in, it oozed into new cracks and wouldn’t stay full. So I created reservoirs with caulking so I could overfill the big windows. And then it took a loooooong time for that to cure enough to sand smooth. Next came the part I had spent the most time thinking a about: the leveling the table. With one edge 3/4” thick, and the other edge 3” thick, I needed spacers between the legs and table to even it out. I was really happy with the solution I came up with. With that done, was able to focus on finishing the top. I sanded the top down to 600 grit and that made the resin a dark grey color. But with the wipe on poly finish, it immediate became clear. But it took many coats to get the super shiny finish that you see here. This is the shiniest piece of art I’ve ever made.

After getting the table as smooth as I possibly could, I cleaned out the holes and soft spots with my dremel and then cleaned up and sanded the edges. I then applied some oil based amber colored hand rub poly. It really brought out the color and the pattern of the rings. I need to coat all of it before I begin the resin process.

Came back to the router/planing process with the right PPE and got to work on the under side of the table. After several passes to get as much level as I could without making the thin edge too thin…. I brought it up to working height and started belt sanding it. Tedious but fun work to remove the gouges and ridges left by the router and start to uncover the beautiful grain of the wood.

For something completely different, I’m going to turn this interesting tree slice into a coffee table for a wedding present. It’s @ 48” x 41”. It’ll be my first live edge wood project and it has some unique challenges that I’ll have to overcome. I’m nervous and excited to learn new techniques and use new tools. And I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

First coat of varnish on and it made everything appropriately smooth and satin-y. And then it was time to clean up the hardware. I didn’t want to make the k***s look like new. I just wanted them to have character. They turned out well and can’t wait to see them on the drawers and doors once varnishing is done.

Today was staining day. The chest of drawers have a lot of internal parts that needed repair, sanding and prepping. And the chest itself needed repair and sanding and prepping too. And once all that was done, the real transformation begins: the staining. The colors in the wood really came out today and the new stain matched the old stain very well. Varnishing tomorrow!

Today’s update. Sanded off the 50’s decals and then removed the broken veneer. I was able to find a block of bird’s eye maple to match the pattern of the old veneer so I cut that out with my bandsaw. Then after glueing them down, I stained the doors and drawers. The last pics are what they all look like together. The cabinet is still in the prepping process before restraining.

My first big job for this piece is to fix the top drawer. The face was broken and missing the lower half. I disassembled the drawer, and cleaned it up. Then I crafted a replacement drawer face out of which matched the other drawers pretty well. And then I glued it all together. It turned out pretty well.

The aquarium stand is operational! Yay! So good to see a functional piece of art being put to its intended use.

My latest project has been a little bit different from other things I’ve made lately. This is a feral cat feeder. 33” x 24” It holds three food dishes and has windows so the wild cats will see if predators are coming. It swings open for cleaning. Has a front porch for lounging and an overhanging roof to keep the food and cats dry. It’s made with pressure treated lumber so it’ll hold up to the elements. Here is the design that my client and I came up with together. And of course the after pics. It’s pretty cute and client will paint it to make extra cute.

(Edited to remove “shelter” from the description once I learned that feral cats don’t eat and sleep in the same place)
