Every house has a room that collects people.

Not the formal one. The one with the worn path between the couch and the fridge, where somebody is always standing even though there are six empty chairs ten feet away. The one where the dog has picked a spot and will not be negotiated with.

By late November there will be nine people in that room, somebody’s cousin, and a folding table nobody planned for.

We talked about kitchens and bathrooms. Now the room nobody thinks about. 🧺

The laundry room.

Ask any insurance company what causes household water damage and washing machine hoses come up every single time. Not dramatic floods — a hose that gives out while you're at work, or a slow drip behind the machine that nobody sees for weeks because the machine is sitting on top of it.

And here's the irony: because laundry rooms are small and nobody sees them, they're where people put the cheapest flooring in the house. The room with the highest water risk gets the least protection.

A waterproof core costs very little extra in a space that size — and it's the one room where it absolutely earns it.

The stairs are usually where the decision gets made. 🏡

Not consciously. It's more like: the handrail gets used a little more. You start thinking about the laundry basket. Someone mentions a one-story house.

October is National Kitchen & Bath Month. And there's a reason it's October. 🍂

The association that created it picked this month on purpose: it's the window when homeowners can renovate and still be finished before the holidays arrive.

Which is also when flooring gets interesting, because kitchens and bathrooms are the two rooms where the wrong floor shows up fastest.

Think about what actually happens in there: the dishwasher that leaked for a day before anyone noticed. Wet feet from the shower, twice a day, for years. The pot that boils over. Steam, every morning.

Hardwood doesn't love any of that. Waterproof luxury vinyl doesn't care — the core doesn't absorb water at all. And today's wood-look planks are convincing enough that most people can't tell until they kneel down.
