Fractal Animation Project

I reached out to a well known German composer of ambient electronic music named Mathias Grassow back in January 2022. Though he has a lengthy solo career dating from the 80s, Mathias has also worked with fellow electronic musicians such as Steve Roach and Michael Hoenig. You can read about what followed in my blog post.

You're not going to want to miss out on watching the video in my blog post! It's incredible! I am saying that as a fan more so than the creator. I was highly impressed with the final product!

Of Architecture and Mysticism

At its essence, this is a Sierpinski triangle created in JWildfire. I made it a bit more colorful and ornate with a few “mystic” flourishes added as well. It was an exercise to take a simple idea and see where I could go with it.

Olmshang City

The Olmshang City fractal was creating with Incendia NEXT. It depicts the ruins of an ancient city. The name is derived from the Olmec people and the Shang Dynasty. It has been purported with some supporting evidence that the Olmec people rose from the Shang Dynasty and migrated to what is now Central America.

Down the Trail Where Brightness Falls

As usual, I created this fractal in JWildfire. It was inspired by a song called Brightness Falls by David Sylvian and Robert Fripp from their The First Day album.

Insomnia's Lost Slumber

Originally designed in black and white, the title was inspired by what appears to be a room with beds lining the walls on both sides. The beds are empty and other elements in the scene give it an ominous vibe. So much so that I decided to do a second version using a hand-picked color gradient. Believe it or not, this image is entirely fractal generated. The fact that it appears to be a room full of beds was merely a pleasant surprise. I could not begin to tell you how I achieved that effect in JWildfire. I just experiment and it was a happy landing. I call the color version the "Red Nightmare Edit". It's a nod to King Crimson's song One More Red Nightmare.

Emerging Knot

Who knew that a relatively mundane shape could become something so cool? My latest Incendia NEXT work shows that it can happen! Background, frame and post-processing done in Photoshop.

Pyramid of Hope

This is a composite of a fractal created with Incendia NEXT, a photo of the moon and a background created in Photoshop. I used high frequency colors to give the pyramid and such a positive vibe. The moon photo was public domain. I don’t recall the source off hand.

Cobalt Palmerium

I named this work Cobalt Palmerium because the focal point of the piece looks kind of like ‘CP’. This is also a thinly disguised tribute to legendary drummer, Carl Palmer who is still going strong at age 71! In fact, I did an edit of this with a modified version of Carl Palmer’s logo overlayed upon it. See below.

This Fear of Gods

Once this work began to take shape, it reminded me of an angry god. The title was borrowed from the Simple Minds song of the same title. They are a band that deserves much more recognition that what they have gotten over the years. If you’re not familiar with them, I highly recommend them. The four disc version of Live in the City of Angels is a great place to start and it’s very reasonably priced for a four disk set. Like most of my fractal work from 2013 to present, this was created with JWildfire.
