Ever wonder how hand hewn marks on a barn beam were created? The big logs would be notched every eight inches or so on all four sides with an adze. Using a broadaxe, one would then flake off the chips until the log was shaped into a squared beam. The chips would be collected and used to make a grand fire for preparing meals and such. If you look at the handle of the adze (left) you can see the oil marks from the men's hands who used this tool well over 150 years ago.
