A very special project for us, and one that was created with a very personal brief.

“A Holiday Called Home” began with the idea of transforming a 1970s Edinburgh flat into a contemporary retreat that felt completely different from our clients’ traditional home in Aberdeen.

We opened up the kitchen, dining and living spaces to create a sense of connection and light, then layered in bespoke oak joinery, natural materials, warm textures, considered lighting and a hand-painted abstract mural.

Every decision was made around one simple idea, creating a home that feels like a holiday from the moment you arrive.

We would love your support for this project.

A large part of our business is designing and finding manufacturers to make our designs and turn them into reality. Here we have one of several designs being coated for a home. Some will have reading lights also built into them. The client wants a relaxed feel and so we are playing around with a contrast overlocked edge detail. The detail will also follow onto the divan which we are having covered some in a contrast.

Really sharing the different projects we are currently working on. We have a few different looks going on and this is by far the most radical. A rear snug / music room. We are looking to remove a Georgian window and add probably a single but maybe a set of full height french doors to open and unify the house and garden. As i have mentioned before, these period properties often do not make best use of the exterior areas. So we want to make best use of this space. Unifying the garden and home.

Working on a home West of Edinburgh. Tricky space trying to pull out all the stops to give texture, yet keeping the space feeling as large as possible. Have to take out exterior french doors with pony walls and replace with black patio doors. We are also taking out the interior doors and replacing with contemporary floor to ceiling, flush veneered doors. This image was for our initial discussion on where I felt they might like to take the space.

I came to Edinburgh to learn Country House decorating and was very fortunate to work and learn at AF Drysdales. Starting in the front showroom and progressing to assisting decorators on projects. Weird to think this before the advent of the Internet. Dial up lol. Glueing braid to walls, hanging pictures, art, mirrors, attaching cashmere stretched over walls and travelling all over Scotland with a posse of White Volvo estate cars filled with sofas, hand carved mirrors, lamps and soft furnishings. Another lifetime fondly remembered.

A customer had already purchased the Harlequin fabric and was in two doubts as whether to carry on. I suggested adding a suede border to the leading edge, and i had some blue ribbon left over from some walling project. I am not sure if i should add more double seamed stiching. I do want a more contemporary heading though. I will wait till we meet and discuss tomorrow. It is important to have ideas but great to share and develop with the customer.

Not all projects are knocking walls down and starting from scratch.

Laying out a very soft furnishings idea for a small project we have been asked to do. The customer chose the fabric and was having doubts about it. I have added a suede border and some blue ribbon to sharpen the look. Just sorting out a more contemporary heading.

January comes around and many designers all over the world are traveling internationally, nationally, sourcing new products, keeping updated on existing suppliers, getting inspired with new ideas for the projects and year ahead. Cassina is a lovely brand, who produce some really unique pieces. I am always trying to see the best designed pieces which are going to stand the test of time in style, functionality and durability to become pieces which will stay with you the client for many years to come. Good interior design should last, grow and develop with your lifestyle. Its not a complete re invention every 3 years.
