Dear High Schooler,

My baby has dreamed of the day she gets to go to school with you. The smile on her face when she says to someone, I’m going to High School, both fills and scares my heart. I sit here thinking about how next Monday my precious girl will walk into high school as a Freshman. Something she’s requested for years…to leave the bubble of comfort and safety of the school she’s been in and to climb a mountain that terrifies me, but excites her. She has dreamed of interacting with kids in general education, eating in a Cafeteria, attending pep rally’s and even being a cheerleader. She wants to attend dances and have a date….shes dreaming of all the things any Freshman girl would. In her eyes you are all the same. Kids can be unbelievably brutal or they can be incredibly kind. I’ve witnessed both ends of the spectrum and thankfully, more choose to be kind. PLEASE choose to be kind to classmates Iike Catherine. She walks differently, she talks differently and learns differently…BUT her heart can break just like yours by unkind words or looks. Choose to see her and speak to her, don’t look away because you are uncomfortable. You might be surprised by the comfort SHE gives YOU. Her smile will spark a light in your heart and I promise your day will be better for it.

I can protect her outside those walls, but you can inside and I’m putting faith in you that you will. And not just her, all of those like her, hell just be kind to all your classmates. Life is hard man and there are so many unkind people, don’t be one. It’s a simple choice you get to make everyday.

It is the joy of my life watching her grow and not only survive, but THRIVE. This summer she has been singing and dancing to Taylor Swifts song 15 with a purity I pray she keeps, but know she can’t. So now my warning…My heart is covered in scars, which means it’s really tough. Hers is not yet and if you put one on it, I’m a Mama Bear like you’ve never met before. Please be the person she thinks you are, be a person she feels she belongs with. Your life will never be the same if you let her into it. I can promise you that. ♥️
