My beautiful piece of Australian Boulder Opal. Shaped from a specimen piece I purchased which still had capping and I was non the wiser about it being a double sided gem.
No AI here this is natural sunlight shining on iridescent greens and blues.
It weighs 105 grams and is 8 cm long x 4.5 cm high.

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Grotto Gemstones and Tools Australia.

45 years ago, my parents took me on a family holiday to Lightning Ridge where I became fascinated by the people and their quest for what are the most beautiful gemstones found way out in western New South Wales.

Fast forward to 1.5 years ago when I had the opportunity to visit a family friend’s commercial open cut boulder mine in Winton, western Queensland.

I have been so fortunate to meet and connect with some of the most amazing people who for years have been mining, cutting, polishing and selling opals from all over the main opal bearing fields of Australia.

I have decided to take you all along with me, if you also have opal fever. As a beginner, I will help you with as many different ideas, options, opinions, what to do and what not to do, what to buy and where to buy, and how to learn about the different stones and gems including shaping, cutting and polishing.

My posts will be through my eyes and will contain honest information as I have experienced it, learnt it and continue to learn all that's amazing about Australian Opals.

So please share my page with your family, friends, colleagues or anyone you know who has a beginner's interest.
