So I had to have my daughter in Broken Arrow, OK for a high school band event on Friday so I decided to see if I could find a BBQ contest in Oklahoma for the weekend. I found a Rib Cook Off Association event in Blanchard. As it turns out, this was a fund raiser for the Blanchard High School band program. So it was fate!
I joined the RCOA and entered! Their credo is “Have fun!” From my first post I had people reaching telling me how good the people are and they were not wrong! I met so many people and every one of them at different times asked if I needed anything or if they could help! Luke Short-Sr and his wife ran a first class event that raised nearly $7500 for the band program over 2 days!!
The RCOA events are a little different than KCBS. 30-minute turn-ins starting on the hour. So laid back, making me feel like I should be doing something! And the judges are sponsors and volunteers, not certified. So tenderness is a must!
This was my second contest cooking ribs with just Heath Riles BBQ seasonings; Garlic Jalapeño, Pecan Rub and Competition Rub, and it went pretty well. I did struggle with humidity. And drying out quickly. So spritzing was different for me.
I liked my first box but the seasoning seemed a little washed off but I liked the taste and tenderness.
My second box, I didn’t like as much but they did look better and they still tasted good. The judges agreed and I finished 10th out of 18 and got a little cash!
Thanks again for a fantastic experience! I have nothing but good things to say and I would 💯 cook one of these again!
