Before Instagram had influencers, we had legendary icons and Peacock Chairs.

And Dolly knew exactly how to work one.

Dolly, Elizabeth Taylor, Marc Bolan, Robert Plant, Bridgit Bardot and plenty more have all been photographed in these wonderfully ridiculous, wonderfully beautiful chairs.

A little bit throne. A little bit bohemian. A lot of personality.

Today, we remember Dolly.

Meet Debbie - The other half of Malawi Cane Collection.

Debbie is our Co-Founder, designer, creative thinker and the person who can probably tell you exactly why a space feels right - or why it doesn’t.

With a background in design and years of experience working on interior and lighting projects across Africa and internationally, Debbie has spent her career creating beautiful spaces and bringing ideas to life.

She has an eye for proportion, texture, materials, light and all those little details that somehow make a room feel just right.

And then there’s the cane.

When the opportunity came to combine her love of design with the incredible craftsmanship coming out of Malawi, Malawi Cane Collection was born.

Together, we’re bringing beautifully handmade Malawian furniture and décor into contemporary spaces around the world, celebrating traditional craftsmanship while giving it a fresh, modern perspective.

Debbie brings the design eye.

Russ brings… enthusiasm. 😂

And somewhere in between, we seem to make a pretty good team.

This is Debbie - Co-Founder, designer and one of the creative minds behind Malawi Cane Collection.

And there’s more of our team to meet.

I’m Russ, co-founder of Malawi Cane Collection - professional cane-furniture-obsessive, serial overthinker of chairs, and firm believer that a home should have a little soul in it.

And I'm not doing this alone.

Over the next week or so, we’re going to introduce you to the people behind Malawi Cane Collection, the faces, characters, makers and dreamers who make this little (and rapidly growing!) adventure what it is.

What started with a love for beautiful, handmade Malawian furniture has turned into something much bigger - a business with massive integrity, connecting incredible Malawian artisans with homes, designers and spaces around the world.

We make things the old-fashioned way: by hand, with patience, skill, natural materials and a whole lot of character.

No mass production.
No cookie-cutter furniture.
No “assemble yourself with an Allen key” nonsense. 😂

Just beautiful pieces, made by real people, with a story woven into every one.

This is Malawi Cane Collection.

And this is just the beginning.

Celebrating the Women Behind the Cane.

This Women’s Day, we celebrate the incredible women of Malawi who are at the heart of the cane craft we love.

For generations, these women have been the matriarchs, makers, teachers and custodians of a tradition passed from one generation to the next, skilfully transforming natural cane into beautiful pieces that carry stories, heritage and pride.

Their hands create more than furniture.
They preserve a craft.
They support families.
They create livelihoods.
They keep a remarkable African tradition alive.

At Malawi Cane Collection, every piece is a celebration of their skill, strength and spirit.

Today, we honour the women behind the weave.

To the matriarchs of Malawi Cane Collection, we thank you for keeping the tradition alive.

Where music meets craftsmanship. 🤎🎶

When Digital Sangoma approached us for a custom DJ booth, we knew it couldn't be ordinary.

Handwoven by our artisans in Malawi, this bespoke cane DJ booth transforms technical equipment into a statement piece, bringing together timeless craftsmanship, natural textures, and contemporary design.

Set against one of Cape Town's most iconic views, it's proof that functional furniture can be beautiful too.

A huge thank you to Digital Sangoma for trusting us to bring this vision to life. We can't wait to see this booth featured at many unforgettable events.

Every piece we create tells a story. This one just happens to come with an incredible soundtrack.
