JULIA CAVALIERI
A Study in Presence, Memory and the Human Form
The Blue Chip Room is pleased to present this evocative portrait by Julia Cavalieri, a South African artist whose work is distinguished by its sensitivity, introspection and exploration of the human condition.

Cavalieri’s artistic journey is an unconventional one. Having initially studied law in South Africa and subsequently spent a period living and working in Paris, she later returned to Johannesburg and devoted herself increasingly to the visual arts.

Her development as a painter was further influenced by her association with respected South African artist and curator Ricky Burnett, whose approach encouraged an intuitive and expressive engagement with the painted surface.
Working across painting, sculpture and installation, Cavalieri has developed a deeply contemplative visual language. Her practice frequently considers the passage of time, memory, vulnerability, loss and the delicate balance between permanence and impermanence. Recurring imagery including nests, birds, horses and shadows often assumes a metaphorical character, allowing the familiar to become a vehicle for more profound psychological and emotional enquiry.

This portrait reveals another dimension of Cavalieri’s practice.
The sitter emerges quietly from a subdued, almost indeterminate ground. Rather than relying upon precise academic description, Cavalieri allows the figure to develop through restrained passages of colour, softened contours and expressive brushwork. The muted palette of olive, umber and charcoal is interrupted by delicate flesh tones, lending the composition an atmosphere that is at once intimate and enigmatic.

There is a particular stillness to the work. The sitter appears physically present yet psychologically distant, her gaze extending beyond the confines of the canvas. It is this tension between presence and introspection that gives the portrait its quiet authority.

Cavalieri's work reminds us that portraiture need not simply record appearance. At its most compelling, it can suggest something less tangible: a moment, a memory, an interior world.

PIET VAN HEERDEN PAARL, RAINY WINTER MORNING

There are certain paintings that transcend their subject matter and become evocative records of a particular place, season and moment in time. Piet van Heerden’s Paarl, Rainy Winter Morning is one such work.

Van Heerden’s paintings of Paarl and the surrounding Boland occupy an important and highly desirable position within his oeuvre. Among collectors, these Paarl subjects are particularly sought after, combining the artist’s distinctive handling of the Cape landscape with a strong historical and geographical sense of place.

In Paarl, Rainy Winter Morning, Van Heerden captures not simply a landscape, but an atmosphere. The subdued winter light, rain-laden sky and quiet character of Paarl create a wonderfully contemplative scene. It is an intimate portrayal of the Cape in winter and a reminder of Van Heerden’s ability to find beauty and poetry in the changing moods of the Boland.
The appeal of these works lies in their authenticity. They preserve a visual impression of Paarl from another era while remaining unmistakably Van Heerden confident, atmospheric and deeply rooted in the South African landscape tradition.

For collectors, strong Paarl compositions represent particularly desirable examples of the artist’s work. As always, subject matter, quality, period, condition and provenance are important considerations when assessing significance and value, and exceptional examples continue to attract discerning collectors of South African art.
