💕 Preparing For A Baby Also Means Preparing Your Relationship . .

Becoming parents is a beautiful transition, but it can also bring changes to your routines, communication and the way you support one another.

Preparing for this new chapter isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about learning how to navigate the changes together. 🤍

❕ Here Are Five Gentle Ways To Begin -

⚪️ Talk About Expectations - Discuss sleep, household responsibilities, visitors and what support you may need during those first few weeks.

⚪️ Practice Open Communication - When things feel difficult, try expressing your needs with kindness. Ask one another, “What would help you feel supported right now?” . .

⚪️ Share The Mental Load - Parenthood involves more than caring for the baby. Talk about how you’ll share planning, appointments, household tasks and everyday responsibilities.

⚪️ Make Time For Connection - A hug, a few uninterrupted minutes together or a simple daily check-in can help you stay connected as partners, not only as parents.

⚪️ Build Your Support Village - Identify the people you can turn to for practical help and emotional support. You don’t have to do everything alone.

Remember, you are both learning a new chapter. You don’t need to be perfect partners or perfect parents. Give each other room to adjust, communicate honestly and reconnect along the way.

Sometimes, the most meaningful preparation begins with an honest conversation. 🤍

What is Matrescence? 🧸 . .

Much like adolescence describes the transition from childhood into adulthood, Matrescence describes the profound transition a woman experiences as she becomes a mother.

Coined by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael in 1973, the term recognizes that becoming a mother is not simply a physical event. It is a significant developmental transition that can influence a woman's emotional, psychological, physical and social wellbeing.

During this season, a woman may find herself navigating changes in her identity, relationships, priorities, confidence and sense of self. She may experience deep love and gratitude while also feeling overwhelmed, uncertain or longing for parts of her former life.

And sometimes, these feelings can coexist.

Matrescence reminds us that becoming a mother is a process of becoming, not a transformation that happens overnight. It takes time to adjust, to find your rhythm, and to discover who you are within this new chapter of your life.

There is no single way to experience it, nor is there a perfect timeline for finding your feet.

So, if motherhood feels beautiful and unfamiliar, fulfilling and challenging, all at once, know that you are not alone.

You are allowed to grow into motherhood at your own pace, with compassion for the woman you are and the mother you are becoming.

And let this be a gentle reminder that you are allowed to find your way through motherhood . .

Matrescence is a season of change, growth and adjustment. And while it can be deeply beautiful, it can also feel unfamiliar at times.

🤍 Here are a few gentle ways to support yourself as you navigate this chapter.

⚪️ Give Yourself Permission To Be A Beginner - You do not need to know everything or have everything figured out. Learning motherhood is a process, and you are allowed to learn as you go.

🎀 Make Space For Your Feelings - Joy, grief, gratitude, frustration and uncertainty can exist alongside one another. You do not need to feel one particular way to be a good mother.

⚪️ Stay Connected To Yourself - Make room for the little things that help you feel like you. Whether it is a quiet cup of tea, journaling, a gentle walk or a moment of rest, your needs still matter.

🌸 Allow Yourself To Receive Support - You were never meant to carry everything alone. Let trusted people help with practical tasks, listen without judgement, and offer you space to rest.

⚪️ Release The Pressure To Return To Who You Were - Rather than rushing to find your old self, allow yourself to discover who you are becoming.

Growth does not require you to have everything figured out.

And above all, remember that you deserve care, compassion and understanding during this transition, too.

You are not just caring for a new little life. You are navigating a new chapter of your own.

Be gentle with yourself, Mama. You are becoming, one day at a time. 🤍

As this week comes to a close, perhaps you don't need another list of things to improve, fix, or figure out.

Perhaps you simply need a moment to acknowledge yourself.

The version of you who tried.

The version of you who felt a little lost.

The version of you who kept going, even when it took more energy than anyone realized.

You don't have to turn every difficult experience into a lesson by Friday. You don't have to feel completely ready for the week ahead.

For now, let these words be something gentle to return to. Read them slowly, and keep the one that feels most needed.

🌸 May you give yourself the same patience you so freely offer others.

Here are a few lovely, soft and beautiful affirmations to end-off the week ✨ . .

~ I am allowed to end this week without having made sense of everything.

~ I can be proud of the quiet ways I showed up for myself.

~ I do not need to carry this week's heaviness into the next.

~ I can meet the days ahead as I am, not as I think I should be.

Wishing you a softer ending to your week and a little more room to simply be. 🤍

Understanding Prodromal Labour 🤍

If you’re approaching the end of pregnancy and suddenly find yourself experiencing contractions that feel very real - Only for them to slow down, change or disappear - You may be experiencing prodromal labour.

Prodromal labour is a pattern of contractions that can feel very similar to early labour, but which do not progress into active labour. The contractions may be uncomfortable or painful, can sometimes become quite regular, and may continue on and off for several hours or even days.

It can be particularly confusing for first-time mothers. You may start timing every contraction, wondering whether this is “the beginning”, only to find that things settle again.

And emotionally, that can be exhausting.

It’s important to remember that prodromal labour is not your body getting it wrong. Your body may be preparing for Birth, and although it can feel frustrating, this period can be part of the journey towards labour.

🌸 If you’re experiencing prodromal labour, here are a few gentle things that may help . .

⚪️ Rest Whenever You Can - If contractions are stopping and starting, use the quieter periods to sleep, lie down or simply allow your body to rest. Save your energy for when labour establishes itself.

⚪️ Keep Yourself Hydrated - Sip water regularly and consider nourishing yourself with small, easily tolerated meals or snacks. Labour requires energy, and you want to keep your reserves topped up.

⚪️ Try Different Positions And Gentle Movement - Walking, swaying, rocking on a Birth ball, changing positions or resting on your side may help you find what feels most comfortable.

⚪️ Create A Calm Environment - Lower the lights, have a warm shower or bath if appropriate for you, listen to something soothing and practice slow, relaxed breathing. The more supported and safe you feel, the easier it may be to rest between contractions.

⚪️ Try Not To Watch The Clock Constantly - It can be tempting to time every contraction and analyze every change. But if you are able to, step away from the clock and focus instead on how you are feeling.

And most importantly, listen to your intuition.

Prodromal labour can sometimes be difficult to distinguish from early or progressing labour. If your contractions become regular and progressively stronger, your waters break, you experience bleeding, your baby's movements change, you are concerned about anything you are experiencing, or you simply feel that something isn't right, be sure to reach out to your Birth Team for gentle guidance and advice.

There is no prize for waiting it out alone. 🤍

Birth doesn't always begin with a dramatic moment where everything suddenly changes.

Sometimes, there is a gradual unfolding.

A little preparation.

A little waiting.

A little uncertainty.

And then, when the time is right, your body finds its rhythm.

So if you are in this in-between space right now, be gentle with yourself.

Rest. Nourish. Breathe. Trust.

You don't have to know exactly when labour will begin.

You only need to meet this moment, one moment at a time. 🤍
