Some clients don’t want the Luyanda Corner Unit. They want their own version of it.

This one’s been reworked into a full U-shape for a Sandton home — the same low, generous seating, just wrapped around the room instead of tucked into a corner. Mustard scatters finish the look, but the real story here is the shape itself: proof that a JVB piece is a starting point, not a fixed answer.

Visual weight has very little to do with size — and once you can see it, you can’t unsee it.

Three things create visual weight: value (dark reads heavier than light), density (a solid block reads heavier than an open frame), and texture (rough or matte surfaces pull the eye more than smooth, reflective ones). A small black side table can out-anchor a large pale sofa on all three counts at once.

This is why symmetrical “matching” often falls flat — two identical lamps balance size, but not necessarily weight, if one sits against a dark wall and the other against a pale one. And it’s why designers will happily pair one large, light piece with one small, dark one and call it balanced, because on paper it isn’t, but to the eye, it is.

Next time a room feels slightly off despite everything being “the right size,” check value and density before you check measurements. That’s usually where the imbalance lives.
