This artwork is inspired by the rich layered soil of the beautiful Cape area, reminding us that we walk upon a golden, fertile layer of endless possibility.
As a spiritual metaphor, our hearts are the soil that requires heaven’s seeds to yield the true glory of creation.

“You are Here.”
*every believer is on a spiritual pilgrimage homeward.

📍

Walking on this earthy path
( oh the place’s you’ll go! )
Our faith
can wander
in the valley of the shadow of death
with every
new step
we must overcome
obstacles, detours, dark days.
scorpions and snakes
waiting with their
hidden poison, traps and snares
Yet God sees us
already in his Spirit
on the Mountain Top,
the secret place of the Most High.
in His loving Presence
We are being called
in holy rhythm
united with His heartbeat
to Heavenly Places.
Arriving in our
eternal
safe shelter
Fulfilling our
unique destiny.

You are Here.
In His dwelling space
You are Home.

“I am but a pilgrim here on earth: how I need a map—and your commands are my chart and guide. I long for your instructions more than I can tell.”
Ps 119:19

“You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence”
Psalm 16:11

"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty"
Ps 91:1

The valley is never a permanent destination, only a temporary place we walk through.
Jesus is the way, the truth and the Life. He is the map, living word, that is leading you towards your loving Father.

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps".

At a certain time every night, the SABC broadcast would end. The screen would fade to a geometric pattern, a sharp beep would pierce the quiet, and everyone knew the TV was now offline. It was an universal boundary we no longer possess. This work contrasts the forced stillness of the 80s and 90s with today's relentless 24/7 digital stream, asking if true, authentic human connection can survive the noise of constant availability.

Silencing the power of the “Prince of the Air” - the ancient broadcaster of discord and distraction, the artwork acts as a visual prayer for stillness and true reflection.

Thus confronting the viewer with the ultimate symbol of being "offline," this piece poses a vital question: in choosing to be globally connected 24/7, have we lost the ability to connect authentically with each other, and ourselves, the way we did forty years ago?

The Fire Lily is a fire-resistant fynbos plant in South Africa that produces bright yellow or red flowers. These special plants use a wildfire as a signal to bloom from the dark soil after a disaster.

The painting depicts a woman sitting peacefully in the Field with Fire-lilies.
The Fire Flower becomes a symbol of hope for all who are being refined by God in his purifying fire, testing our faith and strengthening our hearts to know we will bloom forever in his Garden of Glory.

❤️‍🔥🌸❤️‍🔥🌸

Job 23:10 says, "But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold"

“This third I will put into the fire; I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, 'They are my people,' and they will say, 'The LORD is our God.'"
Zechariah 13:9

“In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed."

Homecoming // Tuiskoms Art Exhibition

This past weekend was truly special. ✨
Thirty years ago, I received the wonderful news that I had been accepted to study Graphic Art at Stellenbosch University. Those were unforgettable times, filled with many all-night sessions alongside fellow art friends.

Thank you, dear Samarie Smith, for making it possible that, thirty years later, we could experience another Homecoming moment and exhibit our art together during the Maties Alumni Homecoming weekend.

A special thank you to Stephen from for hanging and placing all the artworks for us. I truly appreciate your professionalism and expertise.

And thank you to Maties Alumni for this very special opportunity to celebrate our journey through art.

Our artworks are still available to view until 9 October at “Die Stal”, Coetzenberg.

Die Stal at Coetzenburg is a historic mid-18th-century Cape Dutch barn on the Stellenbosch University campus that now serves as an Alumni Clubhouse at Die Stal and multi-purpose community event space.

Location: Suidwal Street, Coetzenburg, Stellenbosch, 7600
