That Rainbow Obsidian may be real—but is the photograph telling the truth? 🌈⚠️

Rainbow Obsidian’s sheen can change dramatically with lighting and viewing angle. Online photographs can also be heavily saturated, making a genuine piece look very different from the specimen that eventually arrives.

Before buying, ask the seller for photographs or a short video in natural light and from several angles.

Which crystal name confused you when you first started collecting?

Finding the same crystal claim on several websites doesn’t necessarily mean it has been independently verified—they may all be repeating information from the same source.

When you encounter an exciting claim about a new crystal material, look beyond retailer descriptions and check a mineralogical database such as Mindat. It can help you trace the material back to reliable information about its identity, composition and locality.

A little fact-checking can prevent a very persuasive story from quietly becoming an accepted “fact”. 🔎

Obsidian is natural glass. But that doesn’t mean every piece of glass labelled “Obsidian” is natural. 🌋💎

Colourful manufactured glass has been sold under all sorts of exotic names—and these days, the story sometimes goes much further than the name. You may encounter supposed mining localities, trace elements and detailed geological explanations for materials that aren’t natural Obsidian at all.

In this episode of Fakeries & Trickeries, we investigate some practical red flags: unusual transparency, suspicious body colours and claims that don’t stand up to independent investigation.

Manufactured glass isn’t inherently bad. Some of it is beautiful.

The problem is being told it came from a volcano when it came from a factory.
