Day 5 of Navratri đź’› today's colour is yellow.
Today's recipe is a very special Mangalorean recipe and perfect for yellow day - Southekayi Majjige Huli / Mangalore Yellow Cucumber buttermilk Curry.
This is a very comforting, cooling and soulful recipe from coastal Karnataka. The yellow cucumber is very watery, soft and cooling for the body, perfect for fasting days. It is made in a curd and coconut gravy and tastes so yummy with rice.
Southekayi Majjige Huli - For 2 people
Ingredients one after another:
1 medium yellow cucumber / mangalore southekayi
Salt to taste
Little water to cook
To soak and grind:
2 tbsp chana dal - soak for 3 to 4 hours
2 tbsp fresh coconut
2 tsp green chilli
2 tbsp thick curd / yoghurt
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
To thin the gravy:
1/2 cup buttermilk or water as needed
For tadka:
1 tsp oil or ghee
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
Few curry leaves
Method:
Peel the yellow cucumber, chop into cubes and cook with salt and little water till soft. This vegetable leaves a lot of water so add very little water at first. Separately grind soaked chana dal with coconut, green chilli, curd and turmeric into a smooth paste. Now add this ground paste to the cooked cucumber. Add buttermilk or water to adjust consistency and give a good boil. The gravy will thicken so add buttermilk as needed. Finally temper with oil, mustard seeds and curry leaves and add to the curry. Serve hot with rice.
Aps notes:
Do not add too much water while cooking cucumber. You can add a few drops of coconut oil in tadka for authentic Mangalorean flavour. Adjust curd and chilli as per your taste.
