Most families set up a homeschool space by recreating a classroom at home. A desk, a chair, a few shelves.

But home learning works differently. Your child isn’t moving between rooms, teachers and activities all day, so the space has to do that work instead. It needs areas for focus, for movement, for creativity and for rest, and it has to change as your child grows.

After 15 years as an educator, this is where I see families get stuck the most. The pieces are right, but the layout isn’t working for how their child actually learns.

Children don’t learn to love books by being told to read. They learn it from the right book, at the right age, within reach.

Picture books are where it starts. For under 5s, the illustrations carry the meaning, so children can “read” a story long before they read words. That early confidence builds language, attention, and a habit of reaching for books on their own.

I’ve put together my favourite picture books for every stage, from 0 to 5+ years old.
