We're proud to share that our own Georgi Fairley will be presenting at the Learning Environments Australasia UNLEASH conference in Perth! 🎉

Alongside Freya Kuchel from DesignINC, they'll be leading an interactive workshop — Our Learning: Everyone, Everyday — exploring how school facilities could be reimagined as shared civic infrastructure for whole communities and all generations.

It's exactly the kind of future-focused, research-grounded thinking we love to bring to our work at FPPV Architecture.

We can't wait to hear how it goes! 💚

This ANZAC Day commemorates 110yrs since the Gallipoli Campaign, and the 75th anniversary of Australian Service in both the Korean War and Malayan Emergency. These are only three of the many conflicts, wars and peace operations that Australians have served in.

We recognise and thank all Australian and New Zealand personnel who have served and continue to serve, and reflect on their bravery and sacrifice.

Lest we forget.

The images are provided thanks to the Department of Veteran's Affairs, who prepare commemorative posters and learning resources every year.

Each of these posters comes with a snapshot into history and detailed references:

| Project Completion |
FPPV is delighted to present the completed project at Coburg Uniting Church. After extensive planning, the new extension connects modern community requirements with a rich cultural heritage.

Emphasizing community, connection, and belonging, the design invites local residents to engage with its programs and events, or simply to stop and rest a moment. The Graham Willoughby screens overlook the new deck and cast gorgeous light patterns inside. FPPV had the pleasure of working with Graham and LUMP Sculpture Studio to turn his work into these beautiful screens.

Inside, the church's heritage has been preserved, with the congregation keen to highlight the beautiful space, originally designed by architect Keith Reed. Additions such as a new narthex and large doors opening to the courtyard offer versatile ways to use the church and foster connections with both the community and nature. A simple colour palette respects the existing buildings and reflects the congregation's association with the Tree of Life.

The new foyer retains the link to the existing Hall while providing access to upper levels, including a gathering area and meeting rooms. These areas are designed for community rental and as overflow spaces during services and events. Operable windows in these upstairs sections ensure a strong connection with the church's activities, catering to diverse sensory and experiential preferences.

Embracing the welcoming spirit of this community, even the dinosaurs are invited to join in!

April 7 marks World Health Day each year. This year, with the theme 'Our Planet, Our Health', the WHO advocates that the planet and our health are integrally entwined. Humans require clean water, nutritious food, and breathable air to be healthy. More and more studies are also showing that we need connection, access to the natural environment and support systems to thrive. And for all that, we need a healthy planet.

What steps we each take, as individuals and companies, toward that common goal can vary. Even the smallest of steps is still an improvement. As designers, we have the ability to guide the built environment toward healthier choices, and it's an opportunity and privilege we should value.

Here is to a healthier environment, a healthier mindset and a healthier world.

"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." -- Groucho Marx

With or without a dog, is anyone reading (or writing) any great books at the moment? Particularly books related to the world of architecture and design, but the FPPV team are always keen for recommendations for the TBR pile!

"The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn't said." -- Peter Drucker

So much of human interaction relies on nuance and the subconscious. Designers work with negative space as much as positive, so hearing what isn't said is a little bit like seeing what isn't there. Easy, right?

It's amazing how much design can change in 15 years. It's the same project and space but a completely different appearance.

That said, the intent of the design hasn't changed much. The first project was groundbreaking for its day. The key driver was to reduce staff sick days. To do that, the design team identified the need to demonstrate staff value through design. This included the introduction of cafe-style spaces on every floor to allow staff to gather, change pace and collaborate. The defining values of the design are independence, community and ownership.

The fit-out also focused on ESD, and was one of the first projects in Australia to use E0 board and prioritise low VOC products.

So while the design aesthetic may have changed, the basic principles have only grown and improved over time.

With a new gymnasium soon to be completed, FPPV Architecture has worked with Taylors Lakes Primary School to re-purpose the old sports hall. The refurbishment accommodates two new large learning spaces. The existing sports hall, built in 1987, lends itself to being converted into learning spaces as the building already houses an art room, music room and ancillary facilities.

The challenge with the conversion was to provide as much natural light and ventilation into a landlocked area. This was achieved by providing new window openings and integrating the hall's existing high-level windows into the learning spaces via raked bulkheads. New internal finishes have also maximised the natural light creating brighter spaces for the well-being of the students.
