I have been asked a few questions lately about materials, design, processes etc so I thought I’d jump online and answer some…
This may help some of you that are thinking about renovating your Kitchen.
Here is Part 1
Things to think about before renovating your kitchen -
Let’s talk Budget first, although not many people like to, we understand this completely as trust is a massive factor in this conversation and that takes time.
Some people come to us and they say “How much does a full kitchen cost?” well, this is a really hard question to answer.
There are many different materials we can use in your kitchen from the most cost-effective ones like Melamine board doors and Laminate benchtops to higher end Painted doors and Stone Benchtops. There could be beautiful timber/veneer features, stainless steel and much more that will affect the overall price.
The exciting thing is that there is so much to choose from, this can be overwhelming sometimes too so talking to a designer will help you narrow this down to what suits your budget and design.
Sometimes a ball park figure of what you are wanting to spend helps us, we can then assist you in working towards this. If I’m pushed, the truthful vague answer would be - “You may get an smallish kitchen for $10K, while upgrading some products might be $10-$20K and certainly on the higher end it would be more…
Majority of kitchens we do are a long term investment, we want them to last so even things like good hardware are important, by hardware I mean all the hinges, runners and mechanisms. To be honest, if I were to upgrade anything in my kitchen it would be these. At Sage and Oak Design we use Blum runners and hinges as ‘standard’ and this is because they have been tried and tested and have a life time warranty. We wouldn’t put anything in your home that we wouldn’t have in ours.
We also custom make our cabinets to suit your space, we don’t have to pick from certain increments (300mm, 400mm, 500mm etc) this means you don’t have unnecessary large fillers and gaps. Overheads are finished off beautifully with underpanels to match the doors and bulkheads to the ceiling so you don’t need to worry about dust collecting where you can’t reach. Our white internal carcases are made from quality materials, fully enclosed ‘box’ with a 16mm solid back. Sage and Oak Design will help you get the most out of your budget without sacrificing on quality.
Other things to factor in the budget are:
Splashbacks – Tiles are generally the most cost effective, You can get some nice large ones now if you didn’t want too many grout lines or you can do some amazing patterns with smaller tiles and add a bit of colour. We can also do glass, acrylic, stone and stainless steal splashbacks. It is certainly an area that you can make a focal point to stand out or if you would prefer, can be quite subtle.
Appliances – In some cases we can use the existing ones, I have noticed quite often over the years that one appliance breaking or not working sparks the interest in getting a new kitchen, if you require new appliances we can assist you with this or you are more than welcome to purchase your own, but lets do the design first to make sure they fit 😀
Flooring – We can usually follow the existing footprint if you are not wanting to change your floor. If you are wanting to change the layout of the kitchen sometimes this will require ‘fix ups’ to existing floor, whether that be tiles, timber etc or you may decide to get new flooring but again it all adds to the cost and something to keep in mind.
Lighting – You may like to add lighting to your cabinetry, this can be in the form of concealed strip lighting, spot lights etc. We can build these into the cabinets so all you electrician needs to do is connect them up.
That brings me to trades -
Electrician – An electrician will be needed to dis-connect, possibly relocate and re-connect power
Plumber – For Gas and Water, again dis-connection and re-connection
Tiler – If you choose tiles.
The last part I’ll mention is a good installer, I’ve always said it’s one thing to do great drawings and 3D’s on paper but if you don’t have a good installer it will all fall apart. Sage and Oak Design work with fantastic qualified trades, the results we get are exactly as we expect. Clean and tidy sites are a priority and we can say confidently that you will be happy with the end result.
We can organise all the trades as we like to make this experience for you as stress free as possible.
I hope this all helps with the question "what does it cost?”
Part 1 ended up longer than I thought but thanks to those that stayed with me.
It certainly isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to kitchens but that’s we love.
Next we'll talk about different materials – Stay Tuned
