Simply Sarj 'My Recipe for Cultural Interchange' is a 433 page book for cultural exchange and adaptation. 6NORTH

In my book I explain that all cultures can learn from each other and my goal is to help people on each side of this cultural interaction because I have experienced the complexities and misunderstandings of cultural differences and sensitivities/insensitivities and I want to help bridge the gaps between cultures. I know that it is necessary for international students, parents, host families, migran

ts and refugees to prepare themselves well before they live in another culture because I remember what I had to experience when I moved from the East to live in the West many years ago. Let me share with you some of my experiences as a traveler and Homestay mother. Some of my stories are funny and some are sad, but they are all very relevant to the realities of this experience that we all call life. I have learnt that it is inevitable that people will change as a direct result of cultural interaction and exchange and that is why I have referred to this two-way experience as Cultural Interchange

Cassava grew in my motherโ€™s garden so well that I do miss not having the right climate to grow it in Adelaide ๐Ÿ˜” In Malaysia we call Cassava โ€˜Ubi Kayuโ€™ literally means wood potato! ๐Ÿฅ” My mum would make savoury and sweet dishes with it. To pull it out of the ground was quite tricky because unlike our usual potatoes that grow in shallow depth but this ubiโ€™s natural shape is long and grows quite deep in the soil. It wasnโ€™t as simple to pull it out of the ground it required a lot of muscle power as well as digging to get to the roots. I remember in my childhood that even after pulling out the whole long roots of this Ubi there were still more digging left to get to the remainder that was either broken during digging and the side shoots that produced more bulbs ๐Ÿ‘Œ To make the cake the Ubi has to be grated then flavoured, in this instance brown sugar and some white sugar and coconut milk with fresh coconut ๐Ÿฅฅ flesh (grated) then boiled or steamed as in my childhood but also nowadays we baked it ๐Ÿ‘Œ My comfort food and my favourite flavours of my childhood if not this then the alternative would be Sago pearls or anything thatโ€™s made of Tapioca flour also a product of Cassava aka Ubi Kayu as well as known for cooking with love โค๏ธ

18 years later I picked up my golf sticks again with a game of golf โ›ณ๏ธ with my good friend and her friend The day was the best day that we have had weather wise in Adelaide after many days of rain โ˜”๏ธ (not complaining!๐Ÿ˜) The par 5 course at the North Adelaide Golf Course was turned into 13 holes due to the course renovations. Having played ten years of Championship golf these 13 holes were long enough for me yesterday ๐Ÿ˜‚ If it wasnโ€™t for my friend Vivianโ€™s gift ๐ŸŽ for my belated birthday I wouldnโ€™t have known that I could still play after 18 years of not playing. Thank you friends for showing me that itโ€™s never too late to achieve your goals and dreams! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ’ Good luck Vivian to your beginning years of golf journey and may you also find fulfilment and success but enjoy each step. ๐Ÿ˜˜ p.s. came home and made some cold rolls with homegrown Cos Lettuce ๐Ÿฅฌ plus some sweet coconut Apam ๐Ÿ˜‹

Happy birthday to me!! A great day with this reconstructed birthday cake that I had it in my freezer since Stephenโ€™s birthday in late April. I simply defrosted it and then reassembled it into a slice for myself today ๐Ÿฅณ Slice of ricotta and spinach slices in homemade pastry was my delicious breakfast too ๐Ÿ˜‹ I have many reasons to celebrate my birthday today especially, and some of it I shall keep it for later ๐Ÿ˜Š ๐Ÿ˜‡๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ ๐Ÿ˜‹

This pancake comes packed with emotions of my childhood memories! Waiting for these to cook from crispy edges to soft centre one by one labour of love from my mother ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ™ 11 in the family to feed so imagine how much batter would have been prepared even if we only got one each, but, that wasnโ€™t the case in my household, everyone was fed till they couldnโ€™t eat anymore is how my mother cooked ๐Ÿ’ Enough to feed the army I would say and mum always ate last! So much love in this pancake which is totally gluten free and plant based (if one prefers)๐Ÿ‘Œ coconut milk and coconut water added with some sugar is the key ๐Ÿ‘ this well seasoned Mini Wok was given to me by my mum and she secretly hoped that one day I would be able to produce this recipe on a foreign soil (I have lived in a few parts of the world) and finally here I am doing just that with her blessings from heaven ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜‡ If you ever came across a well seasoned mini wok like pictured here please donโ€™t hesitate to purchase it because these โค๏ธ are just so delicious and yummy packed with memories to nourish the soul ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ This is my beautiful Sunday story and I hope you too have a food memories to share with your family. โค๏ธ

A good reason to cook and experiment on birthdays or any occasion ๐Ÿ˜ The is truly to die for. If you have tried a satay pie before and think nothing could beat it then I suggest you try mine ๐Ÿ˜ the short crust pastry crust is also next level ๐Ÿ˜‹ Homemade scones and cup cakes definitely worth a second piece and the rhubarb stew a great scone topping for those who have diabetes because you can use as much or as little sugar to suit your needs. The spinach pancake was made with chickpea flour batter and soda water was added to give it a lighter texture, only the leaves of spinach were used and the base of it was added to lentils/dhal and soups. No waste is always good ๐Ÿ‘ โค๏ธ

Finally we received much deserved rain โ˜”๏ธ in Adelaide ๐Ÿ™ A weather like this calls for certain recipes that bring back memories of past with nostalgic stories told by my elders ๐Ÿ˜ Nowadays when I make these dishes I also tell my story by sharing it with others. Letโ€™s not stop telling our stories instead create your recipes from memories and stories that you were told by passing onto the next generation! We had these lovely Pakora/Fritters as starters for this rainy day followed by my own mushroom Pho ๐Ÿฒ reminiscing my visit to Vietnam. Both dishes hit the spot in taste, warmed and soulful ๐Ÿ˜‹ โค๏ธ
