There are some recipes that are more than recipes.
These are my Nana’s cockles — her recipe, well-loved and filled with memories of a time when baking was simply something you did for the people you loved.
And honestly, this is the reason I bake.
Not just for the end result, or how pretty something looks when it’s finished.
I bake because food has a funny way of taking us somewhere else. One bite, one familiar flavour, and suddenly you’re back in a kitchen you haven’t stood in for years. You remember a person, a table, a conversation. You remember how it felt.
That’s what my baking did for my friend last weekend. Gave her memories of her precious mum.
To become part of someone’s memories gives them something beautiful, to celebrate and remember long after the last crumb has gone.
Because really, the best things we bake are never just treats. 🤍
