✨ New work from Cleed

Callie’s new works are an exploration of experimentation and innovation — testing new possibilities in enamel and reclaimed materials through permanence, heat, trial and fire.

Translating mark making in alcohol inks into vitreous enamel, Callie sees topographies, microcosms and watercolour garden plans.

Callie is essentially exploring different rates of evaporation in her mark making. At the two extremes, the violence of a sizzle contrasted with a gentle droplet applied on a cool enamel surface.

Making The Artists’ Space
Part Four · The Details That Tell a Story

✨ As we’ve worked on this project, we’ve found ourselves drawn to the smallest details.

A paintbrush worn smooth after years of use.
Clay drying on a studio shelf.
A collection of feathers, stones or shells gathered on a morning walk.
Sketches pinned to a wall.
A favourite chair beside a window.

These quiet details may never appear in a gallery exhibition, but they tell us something about the people who create there.

They remind us that creativity doesn’t happen in isolation. It’s shaped by daily rituals, familiar landscapes, treasured objects and spaces that evolve over many years.

Perhaps that’s what The Artists’ Space is really about. Not just the artworks artists make, but the lives, places and moments that make those artworks possible. ✨

Part Three · Designing a Book You Want to Keep ✨

Design is often at its best when you hardly notice it.

Every decision, from the page size and typography to the placement of photographs and the amount of white space, is being carefully considered by Jill Hermans.

Our hope is that The Artists’ Space feels calm, timeless and generous.

That each page invites you to slow down.

That the design gives equal space to every artist’s story.

Rather than competing with the artworks and photographs, the design quietly supports them, allowing the people and places at the heart of the book to shine.

It’s amazing how many small decisions come together to create something that feels effortless.

✨ New work at Foundry ✨

There’s fresh work from Gavin Roberts of Made by Gav at Foundry, with new pieces joining some of his much-loved wooden spoons and serving pieces.

But Gav has also been exploring some completely new ideas, including his Build a Bot creations, Data and Byte, and the Spacious Scribe – Endless Pencil, handcrafted from reclaimed River Redgum in Gippsland.

Beautifully made and beautifully presented, there’s plenty to discover — including some new creations we’re excited to share with you.

If you’re curious, come in and have a look. You might just find something you desperately needed — and didn’t even realise. ❤️

✨ Making The Artists’ Space
Part Two · Finding the Words

Every artist we visited had a different story. These were collected by Penny Gray.

Some spoke about the landscape that inspires them. Others shared memories of teachers, families, travels or lifelong creative practices. Some described the joy of making, while others spoke honestly about uncertainty, persistence and beginning again.

Turning those conversations into a few hundred carefully chosen words is no small task.

Writer and editor Jes John has been gently shaping each interview into a profile that reflects not only what each artist creates, but who they are and the place they call home.

Our aim has never been to write biographies.

It’s to create a collection of stories that feel thoughtful, generous and true to the people who shared them.

Words and photographs work together in this book. Each gives meaning to the other.

✨ Making The Artists’ Space
Part One · Choosing the Story

People often imagine that making a book is simply a matter of putting photographs onto pages.

The reality is much slower—and much more thoughtful.

Over the past year, we have visited 28 artists in their studios across East Gippsland. Mike and Debbie have captured hundreds of images. Every artist has a story to tell, but only a handful of photographs will make it into the final publication.

Choosing those images isn’t about finding the most dramatic photograph. It’s about asking questions.

Which image best captures the feeling of this studio?

What detail reveals something about the artist’s way of working?

How do we tell each artist’s story with honesty, care and respect?

Every decision shapes the rhythm of the book.

Our hope is that, when you turn each page, you’ll feel as though you’ve quietly stepped into another artist’s world.

That’s the part of bookmaking that readers rarely see—and one of the parts we’re enjoying most.

HANGING IN THERE ✨

Join us this Friday for the opening of our newest Hallway Gallery exhibition, Hanging in There by Inge de Koster.

Working across jewellery and sculpture, Inge creates vibrant, one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by dragonflies, rivers, the sun and moon, and the beauty she finds in the natural world.

As she writes:
“Nothing I make is ever the same: every creation—whether made of music, silver or life itself—is unique.”
