WHAT IS SCANDINAVIAN DESIGN?
With long winters indoors & a deep love of their homes, interior design isn't just about a 'look' for Scandinavians, it is about a creating a warm and welcoming 'feeling' in their homes to live their best life.
Danes always approach design with a long term mindset and know that investing in good design, can improve your happiness and wellbeing - with a deep respect for restoration of their old homes & city buildings, patience, respect and craftsmanship are ever so present, where ever you look.

There's also an air of confidence about their designs - but never in a pretentious way- gone are the days where their homes were light timber, white and grey - colour is absolutely everywhere - layered, tonal and often earthy in palette, to reflect their love of nature - it honestly just works beautifully & feels so good to be surrounded by these colours.

As Scandinavian interior designers in Melbourne, Danish Design is in our DNA. We help homeowners create calm, warm, functional interiors with Nordic simplicity and Australian ease.
We design practical homes, made to enjoy living in - from functional layouts, to layered lighting & swathed in natural materials - our designs make daily routines and life easier, which in turn, enhances our well-being and happiness - and who doesn’t want a slice of that!

Enjoy your chilly evening - candles are lit here - quite a 'hyggelig' evening, if I do say so myself :-)

From the moment you land in Copenhagen, walking along the timber flooring to the calm customs exit - it's clear design is lived and enjoyed by everyone in Denmark - from the cities and government to small business and families in between, design is in the Danes' DNA.
There are many design lessons I learnt whilst living in Denmark, but the one that stands out more than anything is how they embrace a 'less is more' approach to design and life in general.
Open a cutlery drawer in a Danish home and there will be just 1 potato peeler and a cutlery setting for 6, maybe 8 at the most. Both will be good quality - the kind that make cooking easier and more enjoyable. None of that buying for the sake of buying, or 'just in case'. They invest in quality over quantity, wanting to use these pieces forever. In turn, this fits nicely with their passion for sustainability and the environment - less waste and 'stuff' going to landfill.
It is really powerful to see a country embrace design at every level- and it comes from the top, with the government consistently asking: 'how can we improve our cities and design for people, for better living?'
The results are impressive - they cleaned up the harbour so you can swim in the waters; saunas are everywhere; green spaces and playgrounds are everywhere too; they have also designed bike paths for every street, with more bikes than cars. 65% of the Copenhagen ride to work.
Good Design can make daily life easier and more enjoyable and the ripple effect felt when visiting is dramatic.
With Copenhagen being named the 'happiest city in the world', it is clear to see that design has a lot to do with this result.
Have you been to Denmark? What did you notice they did differently, that you really loved & wish we had here??!

What does HOME mean to you?
Is it a place you feel safe and can unwind after the daily stresses of work and life?
Is it an anchor that steadies you and quietly influences who we are?
Is it just a building OR a container for everything that matters to you?

If I take a look at my own home, it is almost an autobiography of my life - what my values are, where I have travelled, who I care about and what's important to me.

I have translated my love of Denmark, of colour and of nature, into a visual language, that is felt as much as it is seen. It grounds me, it humbles me (dinner doesn't cook itself!) and I embrace those simple moments- a cup of tea is worth more than the water and bag, it truly is.
You could even say that our homes are an extension of our bodies and a tool for us to translate our thoughts and feelings.

Designing homes is extremely personal and emotive - I think we might have a sixth sense in some aspects - to tap into what our clients need from their homes to thrive - often when they don't see it themselves. I actually get emotional at the end of projects, as it truly is a journey we go on, with many layers to restore and resolve.

Homes are not just a building, they are a vessel for living your best life.
Transforming homes for our clients so that they are more functional, calm, organised and reflect their autobiography, is truly a privilege.
Time to live your best life?
We are ready when you are :-)

Happy Weekend everyone!

BEFORE AND AFTERS - BATHROOM RENOVATION
It is this time of the year in Melbourne that our clients are very grateful they said yes to adding in floor heating in their bathrooms. It truly is a game changer!
As far as value for money goes, we really believe it is a great investment for physical warmth and comfort. Then, adding visual warmth through warm tones of tiles, stone and tapware, combined, they complete the space and set you up for a great day from dawn til dusk.
No need to head out for wellness, when you can experience it on the daily in your own home. From a gorgeous bath, to saunas and steam rooms, clients are prioritising their wellbeing and embracing a chance to take things slower.
Now I like the sound of that...
Are you thinking of a bathroom renovation? We would love to help you, send us a DM or give Carlie a call.

'Colour is choice - Colour is living without fear'
I heard this quote this week and honestly, I couldn't agree more!
There's been a noticeable shift with clients of late, wanting more colour, texture and meaningful pieces in their home - they're not waiting any longer, the time is now.

With all the doom and gloom around the world, we are all yearning to come home to a space that deeply resonates; a safe haven where you can recharge the batteries and nurture your soul - a container for everything that matters to you.

Working with us, we will hold your hand and confidently guide you to be brave - we will untap what's important to you and essentially translate you, your values and what you care about, into a language of home - of colour, of objects & materials, that tell a story of where you have been and where you're going.

It's deeply personal, almost therapy - it is also deeply rewarding for all involved, as our clients have reflected on after working with us:
'I didn't think we could be this happy'
'It feels so good to be in this room'
'Our home feels like us, it is a joy to live in'

Are you ready to put fear aside and choose to create a home that anchors you, that will without doubt, make you happier?
Let's start the conversation, send a DM, give me a call or pop into the studio for a cuppa, the kettle is warm.

Happy weekend everyone,
Carlie

I love this time of the year - the Autumn sun and softer light hits differently. A room that is drenched in harsher summer light, is now much easier to sit in and enjoy. This room has dual side windows, light coming from the east and west & a peep window to the north. We added built in joinery and layers of texture for an easy come, easy go rumpus room - super easy for the kids to come and go outside and for their dog to be nearby and lay in the sun, snoozin' - just what retrievers do best :-)
Enjoy the mild Autumn weather this weekend, happy Friday everyone!

Who doesn't love a good before and after?!
The Grant House, Beaumaris - a project dear to our hearts - working with fantastic clients and a heritage listed mid-century home - what more could we ask for.
The design vision was about honouring the past, with clean lines, lots of timber, warmth and human connection at the end of the island, for deeper conversations and memories. Through smart design and utilising every sqm, we also managed to include a lengthy pantry behind the kitchen - set up for morning coffees and breakfast chaos with the kids.
A practical home ready for entertaining and laughs, we love mid-century homes.
We help bridge the gap between your vision and bringing it to life, making the process smoother and more efficient- saving you time and money.

Is there an optimal size/shape for a bathroom? Yes, there is my friend- we are rectangle lovers all the way... in older homes, we see a lot of square bathrooms that have a dance floor in the middle, and in today's building market, 2 unwanted square metres is a lot of $$.
Every home and structure is different, but if it is possible, changing the square shape to a rectangle is a game changer. We have altered several homes to achieve a smarter bathroom and often allocated the extra space to wardrobes or other storage that was on the wish list - win/win.
Design is often about making compromises and being honest about what you really need -
If you had to choose over a few extra square metres in a bathroom or the comfort of floor heating for Melbourne winters, what would you choose?
I know what I would choose - comfort all the way!

Join us at our next Studio event where we discuss these topics and more - 'Renovation Readiness'

What's the one thing that will closer align your project budget and brief???
.. Build Less ... every square metre costs $$$- in today's environment, it is even more important to ensure we only build and renovate what is absolutely necessary - that's where interior designers earn their keep - we get creative and narrow down just exactly what you need and how to best achieve this for your home, your happiness and wellbeing.

Smart design often involves us 'removing' extra sqm that you thought you need, yet still providing practical, quality solutions - the goldilocks of design outcomes.
Clever solutions that make your home work harder for how you actually live. These changes help everyone, especially the hip pocket!

Want more connection in your family - build less
Want a smaller mortgage and more financial freedom for holidays and potentially less work/years paying off the mortgage - build less

The art of 'less is more' is where we are at - give us a challenge and we will without a doubt provide a smart design solution that saves you money, reduces stress and frees you up for living life.

Join us at our upcoming studio event - 'Renovation Readiness', where we will unpack what it takes to have a successful renovation.
Tickets via our website and Linkin Bio.
We look forward to seeing you in our studio!
