Your eye notices contrast before it notices colour.

Here's a ridiculously easy way to see whether your room has enough of it. Take a photo of your room and change it to black and white.

If the furniture, walls, flooring and furnishings all suddenly merge into a similar shade of grey, there's a good chance that's why the room feels a little flat.

You don't necessarily need more colour. You might need more contrast😉

If I gave you $5,000 tomorrow and you HAD to spend every cent of it on your home, what would you do?

No bills.
No putting it towards the mortgage.
And apparently no sensible investing. 😂

You have to spend it on making your home better.

Would you finally replace the sofa?
Sort out the outdoor area?
Redo a bedroom?
Buy the ridiculously beautiful piece of art you've been eyeing off?
Get some proper window furnishings?
Or tackle that one room that's been driving you mad for years?

I'm always fascinated by what people would change if the decision suddenly became easy.

By the time I came into this space, my clients had tried several different layouts and were thoroughly frustrated.

They’d considered moving the fireplace. Painting the walls. Replacing the sofa. Changing the rug. They’d even been contemplating moving house.

Sometimes, when a room just isn’t working, it’s very easy to assume everything is wrong.

But it wasn’t.

The fireplace was actually in a great position. The wall colour worked. The rug worked. The leather sofa worked. And there was a beautiful outlook that the room simply wasn’t taking advantage of.
So rather than starting again, we started with the simplest changes.

The heavy smoke-grey curtains were replaced with soft sheers that could open right back and finally let some much-needed light into what had been quite a dark room.

Then we reconsidered the layout.
The television didn’t need to dictate this room, so it went. The sofa moved to the side and the two occasional chairs came forward, opening up the room and creating a much more relaxed, conversational space centred around the fireplace, the outlook and the people in it.

A large piece of art gave us the focal point the room had been missing, and from there we layered in pieces they already owned alongside a few considered additions.

The result feels lighter, more open and far more inviting, particularly for a couple who love having friends over.
And perhaps my favourite part?

We didn’t need to move the fireplace.
We didn’t need to repaint.
We didn’t need a new sofa.
We didn’t need a new rug.

Sometimes good design isn’t about changing everything.

It’s knowing what not to change.

A little bit about trust…

This review absolutely made my day.

And there’s something in it that I think is worth talking about, because working with an interior designer requires a surprising amount of trust.

This particular client knew what she liked. She had great pieces already, plenty of ideas and very definite opinions – which I love.

But when it’s your own home, it can be incredibly hard to step back and see the whole picture. And when someone suggests moving something you love, choosing something you wouldn’t normally choose, or not doing the thing you were convinced you needed to do… well, handing over that little bit of control doesn’t always come naturally. 😉

Trust builds as the process unfolds.

You make one decision. Then another. Things start connecting. You begin to see why we chose that rug, why the scale of that piece matters, or why I keep banging on about proportion and cohesion.

And somewhere along the way, you stop looking at each decision in isolation and start seeing the home as a whole.

My job has never been to walk into somebody’s home and impose my taste on it.

It’s to listen, guide, sometimes gently challenge, and bring together all those things you already love in a way that feels considered, cohesive and – most importantly – like you.

So when a client says:

“It still feels personal and collected, just far more considered and cohesive.”

That, for me, is the whole bloody point.

The quiet little healers. ❤️

I don't think Martha and Peppa will ever understand just how much they've helped us through the last six weeks.

Although, somehow, I think they know.

They've known that something hasn't been right. They've stayed close, offered cuddles without being asked, made us laugh when there hasn't been a whole lot to laugh about, and brought a little bit of normality and joy into what has been an incredibly stressful time.

There's something very special about the way dogs just show up for you. No questions. No expectations. Just unconditional love, a warm little body beside you and, in the case of dachshunds, probably a fairly strong opinion about where they should be sitting. 😂

Our two little sausages have been such a source of comfort.

Martha and Peppa, you really are good for the soul. ❤️🐾

First impressions really do count.

This was one of those spaces my client simply didn’t know what to do with.

It’s a very generous entryway, which sounds like a lovely problem to have, but large spaces can actually be harder to get right. Everything that had been there previously just felt a little lost, and the whole area was quite vanilla and flat.

The answer wasn’t to fill it with more things. It was about getting the scale right.

We added a beautiful long console that properly fills the wall, then went large again with the artwork – chosen by my client and absolutely perfect for the space.

From there, it only needed some simple styling and a little texture and contrast underneath to ground everything and give the entry some warmth and personality.

Nothing complicated. Nothing overcrowded.

Just the right pieces, in the right proportions, and suddenly the space feels intentional.

And that’s often the difference between a room that feels a bit meh… and one that feels finished.

I’ll share the rest of this rather fabulous entry space another day. 😉
