Blight Rayner Architecture

Blight Rayner Architecture Architecture, urban design & interior design practice aiming to enhance & enrich experience of place. This is the core purpose of our existence.

Blight Rayner Architecture is a Brisbane-based architectural practice equally specialising in urban design and interior design. We are led by Jayson Blight and Michael Rayner, former directors of a large national and international architecture practice for over 26 years. Our purpose in creating Blight Rayner Architecture has been to enable us to focus our energies on designing buildings and spaces

of meticulous quality and value - for our clients, and for the public and other users we design for. By quality, we mean both functional performance and crafted making, and by value, we mean both cost effectiveness and cultural contribution to city or region.

The concept for the 1500 seat auditorium was to generate the sense of a rainforest canopy also referred to in the poem. The ironbark folds are shaped to optimise acoustic conditions for opera, ballet, dance, drama, symphony and musicals, using a system of sliding baffles behind perforations in the timber to adapt resonance to each performance mode.

The Glasshouse Theatre is the first in Australia to be able to stage opera, dance, ballet, symphony, theatre and amplified musicals all at world-class level. This is achieved by several innovations - a system of adjustable acoustic baffles behind perforated timber walls around the theatre, a flexible hanging baffle over the stage, and an unconventional proportioning of the theatre which has no seat further than 28 metres from the stage, generating an unprecedented intimacy between performer and audience.

We extend our thanks to and all those involved for their fantastic job of the timberwork designed for acoustic performance.

The inspiration for the undulating façade was a poem written by First Nations Elder and Artist Lilla Watson about the river fronting the Glasshouse precinct.
It talked of the image of viewing fish swimming through the ripples of the river, and we conceived the idea of viewing people in the foyers in the same way through rippled glass, creating a sense of ‘public’ theatre.
Of course, it is also an abstraction of a stage curtain through which people in the street gain glimpses through to what’s occurring inside.

Join us tomorrow as some of the BR team pedals for a cause close to our hearts – The Pedal for Homeless Youth. Youth homelessness impacts 44,000 young Australians, with 1 in 3 young people being turned away from supported accommodation services every night.

The Property Industry Foundation is dedicated to solving this problem. With their Haven House Program, they unite the property and construction industry to build homes for homeless youth.

Last year, we were Queensland’s top fundraisers for The Pedal. Help us make an even bigger impact this year! Come and support us at 12 pm in Queen Street Mall as we pedal our hearts out on stationary bikes to raise funds for PIF’s Haven House program.
Your donations can change lives, providing hope and stability to vulnerable youth. Together, let's make a difference and end youth homelessness.

For 138 years The Lady Musgrave Trust has provided practical solutions that transform lives and transition young Queensland women who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness to a life of opportunity and prosperity.

We are currently in the process of designing a transitional housing complex at a site donated by a major developer in Logan.

We’re proud members of this pro bono project team (including Construction, MACE, XBURO and Saunders Havill Group) working to deliver safe and supported housing for young Queensland women and their children.

Read more about the project and how you can help.

The Lady Musgrave Trust are currently on track to deliver a new transitional housing complex for young mothers and their children.
