Are we decorating our homes to please other people, to avoid offending the neighbours, or to please family and friends?

Are we decorating for the future, appeasing Real Estate Agents for the resale vale?

Are we no longer decorating to please ourselves and our desires in the present?

Neutrals can be powerful.

Colour is a transformative power influencing our self-expression, supporting our wellbeing, connecting us to our memories and experiences, and inspiring our everyday life. 💚

Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending a half day design event in Brisbane. This was presented by Dana Tomić Hughes, an accomplished Interior Designer and founder of Yellowtrace and one of the most trusted voices in the industry.

I admit I hesitated to go at first but I knew this was no ordinary design event about design trends or networking so I went with my heart and intuition.

This was a pause to gain clarity and perspective about where design is heading, to figure out what deserves our attention and what’s just noise. As Dana says “ this is a macro view of where design is heading, grounded in deep observation and independent thinking”. How does it all connect to what’s happening geographically, culturally and economically.

I conscientiously scribbled notes on my notepad and took photos of slides. I have some research ahead of me to do. Amongst all of this invaluable information this quote was one that spoke to me.

The past few years I have had this insatiable desire for deep observation. In hindsight I realise it’s been to feel more grounded in my personal life and professionally, to hopefully, create more meaningful work. This talk captured these feelings and reaffirmed the importance of stepping back to understand global movements and patterns. We are in a crisis of discernment and it’s crucial more than ever that we question everything.

In a world where we are drowning in noise, I want to reclaim my narrative. Are my alignments real? Does it serve my story or dilute it? I want to lead with intention in my creative practice rather than react to the latest trend.

There are no silly questions because we are always learning. Learning keeps us humble. If having a point of view has become a radical act, then go forth be teachable, be enlightened, feel empowered, make your question stronger, and stay humble. ✌🏻🌱

Does reclaiming your narrative resonate with you ?

This is where I needed to be today to calm my nervous system.

For 1 hr I sat here soaking up nature. Feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin, smelling the scent of the riverbank, listening to the birds and rustle of the trees, gazing upon glistening water.

We need nature more than nature needs us. It’s where we feel most grounded and calm.

Bringing nature into our interior spaces acknowledges our innate desire to connect to nature.

To soothe our senses and enhance our wellbeing.

Emphasising our connection to the natural world is the art of Biophillia. 🌱

How much do we value the role of the humble houseplant and its significance in Interior Design? 🌿

What began as a simple post about how much plant interiors have evolved over the past 100 years led me to a deeper and more detailed understanding and appreciation of the history of plants and Interior Design.

I believe our purpose to collect and care for plants has never strayed from our innate connection to nature. But our ability to be connected has been interfered with through our overconsumption, digital technology, citified and towns and more.

Incorporating plants into our living spaces need not be daunting. Start with one plant and start small until you feel comfortable and capable to add more.

An indoor-outdoor connection with make you feel part of the living environment and the power of plants will improve your wellbeing. 🌿
