Short answer: bugs are surprisingly greasy 🦋🪲
Many specimens, like these male comet moths, are full of natural oils that can eventually seep out and ruin their wings with dark, patchy stains. You can even see some of the oil stains they left on my pinning boards. I give them a good soak to draw those oils out now so they stay bright for decades when mounted into frames! 🖤
